The Bedini Motor/Generator/Charger is a family of rotating electromagnetic machines attributed to John C. Bedini and described in the source archive Bedini dossier under several names: the "Bedini SG," the "School Girl Motor," the "Mono-Pole motor" and the "Energizer." The dossier presents the device in three overlapping roles — as a motor, as a generator of recoverable pulse energy, and as a battery charger whose pulsed output is claimed to desulfate lead-acid cells.
Configuration
The machines share a common architecture across the three patents:
- A rotor carrying permanent magnets, all of the same polarity (the Monopole Motor Configuration).
- A stator wound with coils split into power, trigger and recovery functions.
- A timing element — a Hall-effect pickup in US6392370 — Device and Method of a Back EMF Permanent Electromagnetic Motor Generator, a contact rotor switch in US6545444 — Device and Method for Utilizing a Monopole Motor to Create Back-EMF to Charge Batteries — that fires the drive coil at the correct rotor position.
- A recovery path: a rectifier or high-voltage bridge that routes the collapsing coil field into a capacitor and then into a second, "recovery" battery.
In US6392370 — Device and Method of a Back EMF Permanent Electromagnetic Motor Generator the stator is two bars joined by a permanent magnet with magnetized pole pieces at one end of each bar, and the recovery path is a rectifier or diode. In US6545444 — Device and Method for Utilizing a Monopole Motor to Create Back-EMF to Charge Batteries the stator coil has three windings (power, trigger, recovery) and the recovery path is a high-voltage bridge into a high-voltage capacitor and a recovery battery. US6677730 — Device and method for Pulse Charging a Battery describes the pulse-charging stage as a separate two-phase solid-state charger.
Claimed operation
The patents describe a process of Regauging: the flux fields created by the coils are collapsed by reversing the magnetic field in the magnetized pole pieces, which is said to allow "the capture of available back EMP energy." Bedini himself later disavows the "back EMF" description as a patent-office term and describes the effect as Radiant Reactive Power — high-voltage spikes with no associated current.
Reported replication outcomes
The dossier collects self-reported replication results:
- Harlan Sanders reports ~800 rpm on a 22-inch bicycle wheel, a ~20% current-drain drop at resonance, four output batteries charged, charge held 30 minutes at rest, and two sulfated garden-tractor batteries revived to ~7 A for several minutes.
- DMBoss1021 reports a "Primary Energy" beam at bucking-magnet interfaces, amplified by an inert-gas tube, with several resonant frequency nodes.
- Emmett L. Butler describes a non-moving variant with two coils, no rotor and no magnets, producing 2.579 V on a DVM.
- A separate October 13, 2000 battery test reports 12 gel-cell batteries charged from one primary, stated as a "12 to 1 charging factor."
None of these reports is independently verified in the dossier, and no full energy-balance measurement appears.
