Destructive Distillation

Destructive distillation is the thermal decomposition of a solid organic material — coal, oil shale, wood, or similar — in the absence or near-absence of oxygen. Because combustion is suppressed, the material does not burn; instead it breaks down into volatile and solid fractions.

Products

  • Volatile fraction — condensable tars and oils, plus non-condensable combustible gas.
  • Solid residue — a carbon-rich char or coke.
