Coal liquefaction is the conversion of solid coal into liquid hydrocarbon products. It is the broader category within which the karrick-process and Low-Temperature Carbonization (LTC) sit.
Routes
- Pyrolytic routes — destructive distillation of coal to drive off tars and oils, as in low-temperature carbonization. Liquid yield per ton of coal is comparatively modest.
- Indirect liquefaction — gasification of coal followed by synthesis of liquid fuels, as in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.
- Direct liquefaction — hydrogenation of coal under pressure, as in the Bergius process.
Relevance to the source
The source on the Karrick process — a 1932 University of Utah design thesis by Larsen and Stutz — presents low-temperature carbonization as a route to liquid fuel from coal, with claimed yields of about 30 gal crude oil per ton.
