The source archive Bedini dossier is a composite page about John C. Bedini's family of electromagnetic motor-generator-charger devices, sold and discussed under names such as the "Bedini SG," the "School Girl Motor," the "Mono-Pole motor" and the "Energizer." It gathers three US patent abstracts, a critique of a PCT application, downloadable build handbooks, a long run of 2000–2004 forum posts, replication reports, a battery test sequence, a simplified public build guide, and a 2026 update list of external resources and academic papers.

The dossier's defining feature is an internal tension. Its framing — patents titled around "back EMF" capture, handbooks promising "free energy generation circuits," and replicator reports of revived batteries — invites an over-unity reading. Yet the dossier's own central voice, Bedini himself, states plainly that the machines are not over-unity and produce no free electricity. He describes the effect as "Radiant Reactive Power": high-voltage spikes with no associated current that charge batteries but do not register as watts on ordinary meters. His collaborator Peter Lindemann states the same conclusion in one line: "There is NO meterable OU coming out of the machine."
This article summarizes what the dossier contains, what the patents claim, what replicators report, and where the evidence stops.
What the device family is
The Bedini devices are rotating electromagnetic machines in which a rotor carrying permanent magnets passes a stator wound with coils. Unlike a conventional motor, the stator is arranged so that the rotor magnets and the stator pole pieces present the same polarity to one another — a "monopole" condition — and the coil windings are split into power, trigger and recovery functions. A timing pickup (a Hall-effect switch in the earliest patent, a contact rotor switch in others) fires the drive coil at the right rotor position. The energy that would ordinarily be dissipated as inductive kick when the coil field collapses is instead routed through a rectifier into a capacitor and then into a second, "recovery" battery.
The dossier presents the device in three overlapping roles: as a motor, as a generator of recoverable pulse energy, and as a battery charger whose pulsed output is claimed to desulfate lead-acid cells.
The three US patents
The dossier reproduces the abstracts of three patents verbatim. They are the most concrete technical content in the source.
US6392370 — Device and Method of a Back EMF Permanent Electromagnetic Motor Generator
"This invention is a back EMF permanent electromagnetic motor generator and method using a regauging process for capturing available electromagnetic energy in the system. The device is comprised of a rotor with magnets of the same polarity; a timing wheel in apposition to a magnetic Hall Effect pickup switch semiconductor; and a stator comprised of two bars connected by a permanent magnet with magnetized pole pieces at one end of each bar. There are input and output coils created by wrapping each bar with a conducting material such as copper wire. Energy from the output coils is transferred to a recovery rectifier or diode. The magnets of the rotor, which is located on a shaft along with the timing wheel, are in apposition to the magnetized pole pieces of the two bars. The invention works through a process of regauging, that is, the flux fields created by the coils is collapsed because of a reversal of the magnetic field in the magnetized pole pieces thus allowing the capture of available back EMP energy. Additional available energy may be captured and used to re-energize the battery, and/or sent in another direction to be used as work. As an alternative, the available back EMF energy may be dissipated into the system."
US6545444 — Device and Method for Utilizing a Monopole Motor to Create Back-EMF to Charge Batteries
"A back EMF monopole motor and method using a rotor containing magnets all of the same polarity and in a monopole condition when in momentary apposition with a magnetized pole piece of a stator having the same polarity, said stator comprised of a coil with three windings: a power-coil winding, a trigger-coil winding, and a recovery-coil winding. The back EMF energy is rectified using a high voltage bridge, which transfers the back EMF energy to a high voltage capacitor for storage in a recovery battery. The stored energy can then be discharged across the recovery battery through the means of a contact rotor switch for further storage."

US6677730 — Device and method for Pulse Charging a Battery
"A two-phase solid-state battery charger can receive input energy from a variety of sources including AC current, a battery, a DC generator, a DC-to-DC inverter, solar cells or any other compatible source of input energy. Phase I is the charge phase and phase II the discharge phase wherein a signal or current passes through a dual timing switch that controls independently two channels dividing the two phases. The dual timing switch is controlled by a logic chip or pulse width modulator. A potential charge is allowed to build up in a capacitor bank, the capacitor bank is then disconnected from the energy input source and then pulse charged at high voltage into the battery to receive the charge. The momentary disconnection of the capacitor from the input energy source allows for a free-floating potential charge in the capacitor. Once the capacitor has completed discharging the potential charge into the battery, the capacitor disconnects from the battery and re-connects to the energy source thus completing the two-phase cycle."
Note that US6677730 is a battery charger patent, not a motor patent; it describes a pulse-charging topology that could in principle be driven by any input source. The dossier treats it as part of the same family because the Bedini machines use it to deliver the recovered pulse energy into the charge battery.
Two explanations of the same hardware
The patents describe recovery of energy associated with switching coils. Forum statements attributed to Bedini and Peter Lindemann reject a straightforward claim of measurable over-unity, while using a different vocabulary of radiant or reactive effects. These are conflicting explanatory accounts in the source, not two independently established mechanisms. A pulse can have a high voltage without delivering much energy; current, duration and the whole circuit must be included.
The WO 01/52390 A1 critique
William Alek of INTALEK, INC. reviews the PCT application WO 01/52390 A1 and quotes its own efficiency statement (page 12, line 4):
"… the motor to produce an energy level of COP = 0.98, more or less, depending upon configuration, circuitry, switching elements and the number and size of stators, rotors and coils that comprise the motor."
Alek's reading: the patent suggests the possibility of over-unity but claims no actual over-unity. The COP = 0.98 figure applies to the electrical and electronic components only and excludes battery charging inefficiency. Alek estimates the overall system COP at roughly 0.85 — "a long way from being a 'self-runner.'" This is one of the few quantitative statements in the dossier that points below unity rather than above it.
Replication reports
Harlan Sanders
Harlan Sanders reports building an advanced circuit that spun a 22-inch bicycle wheel to about 800 rpm. At resonance he measured roughly a 20% drop in current drain. Four output batteries rose in voltage, and the charge held for 30 minutes at rest. Two "completely sulfated" garden-tractor batteries that would not accept conventional charging later produced up to 7 A for several minutes. He states that the circuits show no gain on conventional meters and that the gain appears only in load tests. He also states that he blocked out parts of Bedini's proprietary circuitry in the photos he posted. His stated instrument is the West Mountain Radio Computerized Battery Analyzer (CBA).
DMBoss1021 and the "Primary Energy" beam
DMBoss1021 reports replicating a Bedini device and observing a "beam" at the interface of two bucking magnets. Placing an inert-gas tube at that location, he claims, produced a "VERY powerful PE beam." Beam strength varied with pulse frequency, showing several resonant nodes; increasing coil current five-fold by mechanical loading proportionally increased beam intensity. He also reports PE emanation at the motor housing and shaft, and numbness in the hand and arm lasting over an hour after exposure. He cites US5929732 (Magnetic Beam Amplifier Field Geometry) and a "Hyper Light Speed Antenna" patent as similar bucking-field/modulation configurations. None of these observations is independently verified in the dossier.
Emmett L. Butler
Emmett L. Butler claims over-unity exists and describes a non-moving generator using two coils, with no rotor and no magnets, producing 2.579 V on a digital voltmeter while charging both input and output batteries simultaneously. He attributes the effect to a "window in time" (credited to Stan Mayer) and invites visitors to his Iowa City office. The dossier provides no schematic, no measurement protocol and no independent replication.
The battery test sequence
A separate, unidentified "BATTERY TEST FOR THE BEDINI MOTOR GENERATOR" dated October 13, 2000 reports four sequential tests:

The primary battery was then discharged to 9 V under load and could no longer run the motor. The total is 12 lead-acid gel-cell batteries (12 V, 450 mA each) charged from one primary, stated as a "12 to 1 charging factor." The test does not account for the mechanical work done by the motor or for the total input energy drawn from the primary, so it is not an energy-balance measurement.
The public demonstration circuit
The source includes a simplified School Girl demonstration using a magnet-bearing wheel, a switching coil, a drive battery and a receiving battery. Its component list and circuit drawings document the replication tradition. Observing rotation and a rising receiving-battery voltage establishes neither an energy surplus nor a safe construction procedure. The archived claim that a shock would not be dangerous is not a reliable safety conclusion.
The measurement debate
A long OtherPower.com thread initiated by finsawyer in March 2004 debates how output should be measured. finsawyer proposes a capacitor-energy method using E = ½CV² and E = ½C(Vmax² − Vmin²). GeoM argues that only real-power draw from the receiving battery versus primary discharge counts, and that the capacitor is the only energy route to the receiving battery. Ted reports 2,900 rpm unloaded at about 280 mA, 1,000 rpm with a fan load at about 90 mA, a battery under charge rising to about 15 V after 10 minutes, and a "sweet spot" in pulse frequency. GeoM notes that no self-running motor has been demonstrated and raises the question of where the energy would come from. One participant notes Bedini's background as a hi-fi tube amplifier designer.
This thread is the dossier's clearest statement of the measurement problem: the claimed effect is asserted to be invisible to ordinary power meters, so the relevant test is a full energy balance. The excerpts do not supply the raw measurements needed to establish an energy surplus.
The 2026 update list
The dossier's update section lists forums, handbooks and academic papers:
- Gay, Zheng Jie (NTU final-year project) — aims to test COP > 1.
- Shahrel Fakhrurrazey et al. (IEEE) — report a 4-pole neodymium design that charges faster, uses less power, and improves COP by 8% over the original.
- M N Hidayat et al., J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 1402 033100 (2019) — describe a 5-coil/5-pole radiant charger.
These papers appear by title and abstract in the source page. Where an openly licensed full paper has been recovered, it is now readable in the supporting documents below. A report of improved charging does not by itself show an energy surplus.
Evidence level and limitations
- Patent abstracts are reproduced verbatim and are the strongest documentary content, but a patent is a legal claim, not a demonstration of performance.
- Forum posts dated 2000–2004 are self-reported and largely unverifiable.
- Analyzer readings (BK Precision Battery Capacity Analyzer Model 600; West Mountain Radio CBA) are cited by the replicators themselves; raw data are not shown.
- No independent instrumented energy-balance measurement appears anywhere in the dossier.
- The desulfation mechanism is unattributed — the dossier does not address whether the battery-revival effect is specific to the Bedini circuit or would follow from any pulsed charging regime.
- The Kron citation (Gabriel Kron, "lamellar currents") is used rhetorically; no derivation or measurement is given.
- The PE/scalar-beam effect and its bio-effect (numbness) are self-reported by one replicator.
- The academic papers need to be evaluated separately from the earlier forum claims; available cleared full papers are in the source room.
Contradictions to keep visible
- The dossier's framing invites an over-unity reading, while Bedini and Lindemann explicitly deny measurable over-unity.
- The patent "back EMF" language conflicts with Bedini's stated mechanism ("Radiant Reactive Power").
- Alek's COP estimate (~0.85) conflicts with any self-runner interpretation.
- DMBoss1021 and Butler assert over-unity/Primary Energy effects; GeoM and other forum participants insist no self-runner has been shown.
- The "12 to 1 charging factor" test omits motor work and input energy, so it cannot support a COP claim in either direction.
