Mixed-Valence Metal Oxides

Mixed-valence metal oxides are inorganic compounds in which a single crystal lattice contains metal cations in two different oxidation states. Tetrasilver Tetroxide (Ag₄O₄) (Ag₄O₄, or Ag(I)Ag(III)O₂) is the archetype in the source archive TSTO dossier, but Marvin Antelman's later patents generalize the concept to a broader family.

The family named in the patents

Antelman's patents US6485755, US6645531, WO0149303, WO03003809 and US6669966 describe "electron active compounds" having "at least two polyvalent cations, at least one of which has a first valence state and at least one of which has a second, different valence state." The preferred compounds listed are:

  • Ag(I,III) oxide — Ag₄O₄
  • Cu(I,III) oxide
  • Pr(III,IV) oxide
  • Bi(III,V) oxide
  • Co(II,III) oxide — Co₃O₄
  • Fe(II,III) oxide
  • Mn(II,III) oxide

The patents state these compounds "may be in a crystalline state having metallic cations of two different valences, or electronic states, in the inorganic crystal."

Claimed applications

The dossier attributes a wide range of claimed uses to this family:

  • Cancer management (US6485755, WO200149303/302/301): Ag(I,III), Cu(I,III), Pr(III,IV) and Bi(III,V) oxides for systemic and external cancers, adaptable to subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, infusion, transdermal or topical application.
  • Skin growth (US6669966): Bi(III,V), Co(II,III), Cu(I,III), Fe(II,III), Mn(II,III), Pr(III,IV) and Ag(I,III) oxides for wound dressings, burns and skin grafts.
  • Antimicrobial textiles (WO0149115): Ag₄O₄ or Co₃O₄ deposited or precipitated within the interstices of fibers, yarns and fabrics.
  • Conditions afflicting mammals (WO03003809).

Evidence status

These are patent claims. The dossier reproduces no clinical data, no trial results, and no independent replication for any member of the family. The only member with an independently documented regulatory use is Ag₄O₄, registered with the EPA as a swimming pool disinfectant.
