"Molecular crystal device" is Marvin Antelman's term for a diamagnetic semiconducting crystal of Tetrasilver Tetroxide (Ag₄O₄) (Ag₄O₄) that he claims functions as a "molecular battery" against pathogens. He also uses the broader term Electron Jumping Compounds (EJC) for the class.
The claimed mechanism
The dossier describes the mechanism in three parts:
- Covalent bonding with the target.
- Release of electrical energy ("nano-electrocution") through a reduction/oxidation process.
- Release of highly active singlet oxygen.
The dossier states that "no other drug or anti-microbial functions in this way" and that the unique method of action "has the potential to establish a new class of medicine."
The patent language (US5336499 / US5571520) states that the crystals contain two monovalent and two trivalent silver ions, and that when activated with an oxidizing agent they "release electrons equivalent to 6.4 × 10⁻¹⁹ watts per molecule which in effect electrocute pathogens."
For the AIDS claim (US5676977), the mechanism is elaborated: device electrons are "triggered" by pathogens, a proliferating virus and immunity suppressing moieties (ISM); when fired they "simultaneously trigger a redox chelation mechanism resulting in divalent silver moieties which chelate and bind active sites of the entities destroying them."
The power-flux arithmetic
Antelman's quantitative argument is reproduced in the dossier and is internally inconsistent. Per molecule, two electrons are released, each with a charge of approximately 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ coulombs. The EMF for the oxidation of Ag(I) to Ag(II) is given as 1.98 V (≈2.0 V), citing his own Encyclopedia of Chemical Electrode Potentials (Plenum, 1982), page 88:
P = E × I
2.0 × 1.6 × 10^-19 = 3.2 × 10^-19 watts per electron
The patent text instead states 6.4 × 10⁻¹⁹ watts per molecule. Antelman then proposes an arbitrary "power flux" constant:
Power Flux = EMF generated per molecule × Concentration × 5
(EMF = 4.0 volts per molecular device; concentration in PPM)
Note the shift from 2.0 V to 4.0 V between the two passages. The dossier presents both without reconciliation. The resulting "power flux to effectuate 100% kills" values range from 12.5 (S. epidermidis) to 50.0 (E. coli, S. aureus, S. faecalis, S. pyogenes, C. albicans).
The "Horsfal series"
The dossier reports Antelman's claimed oligodynamic ordering, which he calls the "Horsfal series" (conventionally the Horsfall series):
Ag4O4 > Ag(III) > Ag(II) >> Ag(I)
The claim is that the tetroxide is a more powerful germicide than other silver entities, including colloidal silver, which derives its germicidal properties from trace Ag(I) ions.
Activation requirement
The crystals "will not do so unless activated by an oxidizing agent." Antelman compares this to the surface "etching" required to activate a photovoltaic semiconductor such as copper indium selenide. See Persulfate Activation.
Evidence status
The mechanism is Antelman's own framing, supported in the dossier by his patents and his own calculations. No independent measurement of the claimed electron release, power output, or electrocution mechanism is cited. The arithmetic is internally inconsistent.
