Moray's Radiant Energy Receiver: Reported Figures, the Germanium Valve and the Twenty-Point Duplication Test

Henry Moray's Radiant Energy (RE) receiver is one of the most frequently retold free-energy claims of the twentieth century: a solid-state box, coupled to an antenna and a ground, said to draw usable power out of space itself with no fuel, no prime mover, no heated cathodes and no moving parts. This article follows the account as it is presented in Moray's own retrospective book Beyond the Light Rays — chiefly its second and tenth chapters and the accompanying apparatus notes — together with the drawing captions and the twenty-point list of conditions that a working replica is said to have to satisfy. Everything below is attributed to Moray's account. The source does not supply independent instrumented measurement, third-party replication or peer-reviewed results, and the figures should be read as reported claims rather than verified performance.

What the device is claimed to be

The RE device is described as an energy converter or transformer that takes high-frequency, high-level "cosmic radiation" and converts it into current of usable frequency and voltage. It is coupled to an antenna and a ground, and it is said to be electrically dead when it has not been connected and tuned to the antenna. Once primed and tuned, it is claimed to draw electrical energy and to deliver it to resistive loads — a flat-iron, a space heater, lamps — or to a motor designed for high-frequency operation. The reported output reaches up to 250,000 volts and up to 50,000 watts, from a box weighing under 60 pounds. A 100-watt lamp is said to burn whiter and brighter than an ordinary one and to survive 157 hours; a 600-watt resistive load is said to reach full heat in under two and a half minutes; and the unit is said to work more than fifty miles from any power line or radio station.

The account stresses that none of the energy came from within the device. Internally it was electrically dead until connected and tuned; the power is said to arrive through the antenna and ground. Moray is reported to have assumed at first that the energy was electromagnetic and terrestrial in origin, then to have revised his view toward a cosmic source present throughout all space — intermolecular, terrestrial and celestial. The source is explicit that he never claimed the energy was electromagnetic in nature. That revision is itself a sign that the mechanism was unsettled by its own author.

The Moray valve and the germanium "stone"

The named key component is the Moray valve, built around a "stone" or pellet. The drawing notes state that more than one valve may be used, and that valves may serve either as rectifiers or as oscillators. The stone is described as purified germanium mixed with other substances, compressed under high pressure and fused into rounded pellets. The accompanying caption lists bismuth, iron sulfide (FeS), pure germanium metal, molybdenum sulfide (MoS), uranium and a triboluminescent substance among the constituents, with the pellet fastened to the envelope using pure tin in place of solder and a bismuth pellet fused to the side. Germanium is said to sit mostly floating between other pellets while making firm, needlepoint-like contact. Silver is noted as having some of the properties of germanium, and germanium is said to work best when impurities are introduced. A caution is recorded that too much added matter increases conductivity and causes germanium to lose its properties.

The valves are described as ionic cold-cathode tubes requiring no external power source. The notes also mention "Moray lead" — lead whose physical properties are said to change after treatment in the apparatus of Moray's US2460707 ("Electrotherapeutic Apparatus") — used to keep the valve at a slightly raised temperature. The patent is cited only for that detail; it is not evidence for the RE claim.

The proposed mechanism: resonance and a bucket brigade

The theory of operation is given in stages. Oscillations are started in a first circuit by exciting it with an external source. The circuit is then tuned until the oscillations are sustained by harmonic coupling to cosmic wave frequencies. The reinforcing action of that coupling increases amplitude until peak pulses "spill" over into the next stage through a special detector or valve that prevents return or feedback from succeeding circuits. Each stage oscillates at a lower frequency, is again reinforced by harmonic coupling, and drives the next, until a usable power level at a usable frequency and voltage is obtained through special transformers. The process is likened to a bucket brigade, and Moray's own rhetorical question is recorded: whether a steady flow of water might be obtained from the waves of the sea, or energy from the vibrations of the cosmos.

A supporting assertion is offered about vibratory impedance: when a vibration of any kind strikes a boundary between two media of different vibratory impedances at an angle of less than ninety degrees, its vibratory rate may be transformed into another rate. On this view the device continues to capture energy by resonance as long as the "keep alive" vibration of the cosmos continues to oscillate the various stages. Once running and delivering power, the account says, the machine does not require any continuance of the excitation forces needed to start it; the oscillations are sustained as long as it remains properly tuned and the external circuit is completed through a suitable load.

The twenty-point duplication test

The most concrete part of the source is a numbered list of conditions that a duplicate of the RE device is said to have to meet. It functions as a specification for a replica, not as a record that one was built. The conditions are:

  1. When the primary side is disconnected, a spark equivalent to 225,000 volts must be drawn between the two disconnected terminals.
  2. Disconnecting the antenna and reconnecting it immediately must leave the lights on; if the lights are allowed to die, reconnecting will not restore the connection and the unit becomes completely electrically dead.
  3. The energy produced must be high frequency.
  4. The device must be operable more than 50 miles from power lines or radio stations.
  5. A 100-watt lamp must burn whiter and brighter than an ordinary one without burning out after 157 hours of operation.
  6. When a heavy load is connected after already draining as much as 4 kilowatts, the present load must not decrease and the lights must not flicker.
  7. A duplicate shunt test, like that made by Lovesy, with number 50 wire must be successful.
  8. Small number 30 wire should be used for all circuits.
  9. At least 10,000 watts and up to 50,000 watts must be produced in a box weighing no more than 60 pounds.
  10. As the ground wire is driven deeper, the amount of power must increase.
  11. None of the components must heat.
  12. No moving parts may be included.
  13. The device must be absolutely silent.
  14. Tuning the circuit with variable capacitors must bring the lights on.
  15. A resistive load of 600 watts must be brought to full heat in less than two and a half minutes.
  16. After 158 hours of operation the unit must still be running and no parts must be heated.
  17. The test performed by Dr. Knudson must be duplicated.
  18. "Smell of zone" should be present during operation.
  19. No heated cathodes or bias power supply must appear.
  20. All of the above must be present at the same time.

Several of these conditions are internally interesting. Condition 2 asserts both self-sustaining operation and a hard boundary: once the oscillation dies, the device cannot be restarted by reconnecting the antenna. Condition 10 makes output a function of ground depth. Condition 18, "smell of zone," is unexplained and untranslated in the source and is best flagged as an unresolved term rather than interpreted. Conditions 7 and 17 name tests by Lovesy and Dr. Knudson that are otherwise unidentified here.

Observations and the evidence boundary

The source reports that many men of science, from foreign countries and from the East and West, witnessed experimental demonstrations and could find no technical fault; that the device was opened for their inspection; that they pronounced the current high frequency; and that they described the light as whiter and more intense yet easy on the eyes, with the device carrying far more current than a comparable circuit could bear without heating. A quoted passage adds that the globe was much hotter at one spot than with ordinary current, that the rest of the globe stayed cool, and that the wires remained absolutely cool no matter how long the machine ran — points offered as showing something "entirely out of the ordinary" that cannot be accounted for by induction from power lines or batteries.

Against this, the source itself concedes that not all of Moray's theories are proven, while asserting that the device works and that the results are certain. That is an assertion of demonstrated operation, not a demonstration record. No independent instrumented measurement, no third-party replication and no peer-reviewed result is presented. The twenty-point list is a specification for a replica, not evidence that one was built. The composition details of the germanium valve come from Moray's own handwritten notes, transcribed with acknowledged illegibility, so some element names are reconstructed rather than plainly read.

Limitations and unresolved questions

The account contains at least two internal tensions. First, the mechanism is explicitly unsettled: Moray moved from an electromagnetic, terrestrial explanation to a cosmic, non-electromagnetic one, and the source says he did not necessarily understand how his detectors operated. Second, the device is described as electrically dead when untuned yet self-sustaining once running; the boundary between priming and self-sustaining is asserted rather than demonstrated. The relationship between the RE device and the US2460707 therapeutic apparatus is also unclear — the patent appears only as the source of the "Moray lead" detail. Open questions include the identity of Lovesy and Dr. Knudson, the meaning of "smell of zone," and whether any independent replication of the twenty-point test exists. This article is based on a partial transcription of the source, so the absence of a detail here should not be read as evidence that the fuller text lacks it.

The RE claim belongs to the same genre as other inventor-testimony free-energy cases in this archive. It parallels the Hendershot fuelless motor cluster and the Bedini SSG energizer, where reported operation rests on the inventor's account and witnesses rather than on independent measurement. It shares with the Rota dossier the motif of energy drawn through an antenna and a ground, and with Aspden's aether and vacuum-energy papers the theoretical framing of energy extracted from space. Those pages should be read as separate claims with their own evidence, not as mutual confirmation.
