This page sets the claims made about the E-Cat (Energy Catalyzer) against the kinds of evidence the source dossier actually contains. It follows the archive's convention of keeping a claim and its support in separate columns of the argument, so that the reader can see where the gap lies. All claims below are attributed to Andrea Rossi, Sergio Focardi and their collaborators as reported by the source.
The claims
| Claim | As reported in the dossier |
|---|---|
| Excess heat | The device reportedly produces more thermal energy than the electrical energy supplied, expressed as a coefficient of performance greater than one. |
| Self-sustaining operation | Once started, the reaction is said to continue without external heating. |
| Nuclear origin | The excess is attributed to nuclear reactions between hydrogen and nickel, not to chemical or external sources. |
| Transmutation products | Copper and altered isotope ratios are reported in the spent fuel. |
| Practical heat output | Thermal energy is delivered as hot water or steam, presented as a usable heat source. |
The evidence the dossier supplies
| Evidence type | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Press and promotional reports | That claims were made and demonstrations announced | That the claimed effect occurred |
| Claimant technical write-ups | The claimants' own account of design and results | Independent verification of calorimetry or fuel analysis |
| Patent abstracts and filings | That applications were made and formal requirements met | That the claimed effect is real — see Patent as Evidence |
| Claimant-run demonstrations | That a demonstration took place | Exclusion of measurement error, unaccounted chemical energy, or undisclosed input |
The gap
The dossier contains no independent, peer-reviewed replication with published calorimetry and blinded fuel analysis. That is the decisive missing item. Without it, the reported excess heat cannot be distinguished from measurement artifact or unaccounted energy, and the reported copper and isotopic shifts cannot be distinguished from contamination or claimant-side analysis effects.
Two further points keep the gap open rather than closing it:
- Patent grant is not proof of effect. A granted patent establishes that an application met formal requirements; it does not establish that the claimed process works.
- Commercial and legal disputes are not physical evidence. Licensing and rights disputes connected with the E-Cat concern contracts, not the reality of the claimed effect, and should not be read either way.
What would change the assessment
A result that would materially strengthen the claim would need: independent laboratories, blinded fuel and ash analysis, full calorimetric accounting of all inputs, and reproduction at more than one site. The dossier does not contain such a result.
