The nickel–hydrogen excess heat claim is the specific mechanism asserted in the E-Cat dossier: that a nickel-based fuel interacting with hydrogen gas releases thermal energy in excess of the energy supplied to the system, and that the excess originates in nuclear reactions between hydrogen and nickel rather than in chemical oxidation or an external source.

The claim as stated

  1. Excess heat. The device reportedly produces more thermal energy than the electrical energy used to run and start it, expressed as a coefficient of performance (COP) greater than one. Reported operating temperatures are in the range of a few hundred degrees Celsius.
  2. Self-sustaining operation. Once initiated, the reaction is said to continue without external heating, with input power used mainly for control.
  3. Nuclear signature. The spent fuel is reported to contain copper and to show altered isotope ratios, which the claimants interpret as evidence that nickel nuclei captured hydrogen nuclei — a transmutation.

Why the claim is contested

  • Theoretical expectation. Conventional nuclear physics does not predict an appreciable net-energy nickel–hydrogen reaction under these conditions.
  • Calorimetric burden. Establishing excess heat requires careful control of all inputs, including any chemical energy stored in the fuel, hydrogen loading, and the electrical drive. Promotional and claimant-run demonstrations typically do not publish the full accounting.
  • Transmutation burden. Copper and isotopic shifts are exactly the kind of evidence that would be decisive if produced under blinded, multi-laboratory analysis. Claimant-generated analysis does not carry that weight.
  • Reproducibility. The dossier does not establish an independent, peer-reviewed replication.
