Moray's Radiant Energy Receiver: The Swedish Stone, the Germanium Valve and the Twenty-Point Duplication Test

What the device is claimed to be

The RE receiver is described as a solid-state converter that draws high-frequency energy from an ambient source and delivers it as usable heat, light or power. In the account's own framing, the device is "electrically dead" until it is connected and tuned to an antenna and a ground. Priming it and then tuning it as it is primed is said to start the draw. Once running, the account claims, it produces up to 250,000 volts and up to 50,000 watts, lights lamps more brightly than witnesses had seen, and accepts heavy additional loads without dimming the lamps already connected. It is said to work "many miles from any known source of electrical energy," such as transmission lines or radio transmitters.

Moray's own attribution of the source shifted over time. He first assumed the energy was electromagnetic in origin, then that it came from the earth, then from the universe, and finally that it was present throughout all space — intermolecular as well as terrestrial and celestial. The account states plainly that he did not necessarily understand how his detectors operated. This is an important boundary: the memoir reports a working device and a shifting hypothesis, not a settled mechanism.

The Moray valve and the "Swedish Stone"

The heart of the original detector is a material the account calls the "Swedish Stone," described as a soft white stone from which Moray developed his first valve. The account states that he was never able to duplicate this material, and that the shortage of it limited how much power he could draw. In 1942, attempting to rebuild a device with the remaining bit of Swedish Stone, he developed a second detector that pushed him into research on nuclear materials and radioactive reactions, including the study of synthetic radioactivity as described by Gustave LeBon in The Evolution of Matter.

The later valve — the "Moray valve" — is described in drawing captions as a metal envelope (numbered 135) with bismuth attached at 136 by fusing, molybdenum sulfide separated from the case at 132, and portions of germanium at 130 between points 136, 137 and 138. The listed constituents are germanium, iron sulfide (FeS), molybdenum sulfide (MoS), bismuth and uranium. The germanium mixture is said to be formed into rounded stones or pellets, compressed under high pressure and fused, and fastened to the envelope with pure tin instead of solder. Germanium is described as mostly floating between other pellets while making firm, needlepoint-like contact. Silver is noted as sharing some of germanium's properties, and germanium is said to work best when impurities are introduced. The captions also warn that too much added matter increases conductivity and causes germanium to lose its properties.

A separate note ties "Moray lead" to US2460707, an "Electrotherapeutic Apparatus" patent, which states that metals such as lead changed physical properties after treatment with the apparatus. The account also mentions triboluminescence as a property of the mixture, and notes that more than one Moray valve may be used, as rectifiers or as oscillators.

The claimed conversion mechanism

The account gives a staged, harmonic-coupling theory of operation. Oscillations are started in a first circuit by exciting it with an external source. The circuit is tuned until the oscillations are sustained by harmonic coupling to "cosmic wave frequencies." The reinforcing action of that coupling increases amplitude until peak pulses "spill" over into the next stage through a special detector or valve that prevents energy from returning to earlier circuits. Each stage oscillates at a lower frequency, is again reinforced by harmonic coupling, and drives the next, until a usable power level, frequency and voltage are obtained through special transformers. Once running and properly tuned with the external circuit completed through a load, the device is said not to require continued excitation. The account describes the key components as ionic cold-cathode tubes requiring no external power source.

The 1938 Jensen letter

The most concrete third-party-style observation in the account is a letter from E. G. Jensen dated March 21, 1938, describing a test setup. Condenser No. 1 consisted of two small sheets of about 30-gauge aluminum separated by, but making contact with, a piece of quarter-inch-thick plate glass that overlapped them. Condenser No. 2 was a commercial 0.025 mfd unit made by the Igred Condenser & Mfg. Co.

With a 60-watt Mazda lamp and the two condensers attached to the antenna, and the antenna and ground attached to the box containing the RE equipment, a 100-watt Mazda lamp on the output side was lit. Unscrewing the 60-watt lamp caused the 100-watt lamp to go out, and screwing it back in relit it. The 60-watt lamp itself never lit under any condition or hookup. Shorting the antenna to ground with a wire, or with the hands, extinguished the 100-watt lamp; no electricity was felt when shorting by hand. Disconnecting either the antenna or the ground wire extinguished the lamp. Jensen notes that neither condenser nor the 60-watt lamp was necessary, and that they were included only to show that high-frequency power passes through condensers.

The behavior Jensen records is anomalous and unexplained within the account: a lamp that never lights nonetheless gates a lamp that does. The letter is a description of an observation, not a controlled measurement, and no independent replication is presented.

The patent record

The account states that the original patent application was filed in 1931 and was rejected on several grounds. The first rejection, attributed to Thomas E. Robinson, Commissioner of Patents, was that no means was provided for causing the cathode to emit an appreciable number of electrons, so the current produced in the cathode by the antenna would not heat it enough to emit electrons. The memoirist glosses this as an assertion that a solid-state device cannot work. The second ground was that "No natural source of electric wave energy is known to the Examiner and proof of the existence of such a source is required" — that is, it was not enough for Moray to demonstrate the effect; he also had to identify the source, which the account concedes he could not do.

The account adds that the family had recently been informed that none of Moray's original patent applications were any longer available at the US Patent Office. Around 1950, Moray is said to have spent most of his time working on a "counter-balance" intended to eliminate the need for an antenna.

The twenty-point duplication guidelines

The account closes with a list of conditions that a duplicate of the RE device must satisfy. Reproduced here as the account states them:

  1. Disconnecting the primary side must draw a spark equivalent to 225,000 volts between the two disconnected terminals.
  2. Disconnecting the antenna and reconnecting it immediately must keep the lights on; if the lights are allowed to die, reconnecting will not restore them and the unit becomes completely electrically dead.
  3. The energy produced must be high frequency.
  4. The device must be operable more than 50 miles from power lines or radio stations.
  5. A 100-watt lamp must burn whiter and brighter than an ordinary 100-watt lamp without burning out after 157 hours of operation.
  6. Adding a heavy load after already draining as much as 4 kilowatts must not decrease the present load or make the lights flicker.
  7. A duplicate shunt test like that made by Lovesy, with number 50 wire, must succeed.
  8. Small number 30 wire should be used for all circuits.
  9. At least 10,000 watts, and up to 50,000 watts, must be produced in a box weighing no more than 60 pounds.
  10. Driving the ground wire deeper must increase the power.
  11. No component of the device may heat.
  12. No moving parts may be included.
  13. The device must be absolutely silent.
  14. Tuning the circuit with variable capacitors must bring the lights on.
  15. A 600-watt resistive load must reach full heat in less than two and a half minutes.
  16. After 158 hours of operation the unit must still be running with no parts heated.
  17. The test performed by Dr. Knudson must be duplicated.
  18. The "smell of zone" should be present during operation.
  19. No heated cathodes or bias power supply may appear.
  20. All of the above must be present at the same time.

The account then asserts that Moray demonstrated under these conditions on numerous occasions, up to 50,000 watts. That assertion sits alongside the account's own concession that the source of the energy was never identified and that the Swedish Stone was never reproduced — the two statements are in tension, and the list itself is a set of criteria rather than a record of a controlled test.

Evidence and limits

The material is historical documentation of what Moray and his circle claimed, not independent verification. The strongest concrete items are the Jensen letter, the valve composition notes, the 1931 rejection grounds and the twenty-point list. The patent rejection is documentary evidence against the claimed mechanism as the examiner understood it. No independent replication is presented, the Swedish Stone was never duplicated, and the account's own narrative concedes that the source was never identified. The account also contains an unresolved category tension: Moray is said never to have claimed the energy was electromagnetic, yet the device is described as producing high-frequency electrical energy that passes through condensers.
