This page summarizes what the source captures establish about how Tetrasilver Tetroxide (Ag₄O₄) (Ag₄O₄) is prepared. The capture [source note 5] contains a full preparation procedure reproduced from Inorganic Syntheses IV:12 (Hammer & Kleiberg) and a modification described by Antelman in Precious Metals 16:141–149 (1992).
Current state: procedures available
Two captures bear on this question:
- [source note 5] contains the Hammer & Kleiberg Inorganic Syntheses IV:12 procedure: 72 g NaOH (1.8 mol) in pellet form added portionwise to 1 L water at ~85 °C; 75 g potassium peroxydisulfate (0.28 mol) added as an aqueous slurry; 51 g AgNO₃ (0.30 mol) in minimum water added; temperature raised to 90 °C and stirred ~15 min; black AgO filtered on a Buchner funnel, washed with slightly alkaline water to remove sulfate, air-dried. Yield 35 g (94%). Analysis: calculated Ag 87.08%; found 86.93%, 86.90% (gravimetric chloride after dissolution in 3N HNO₃). The same capture also reproduces Antelman's modification: 24.0 g K₂S₂O₈ dissolved in distilled water, 24.0 g NaOH added, diluted to 500 mL; aliquots of AgNO₃ containing 1.0 g Ag weighed into 20 mL vials; 50 mL stock heated to 85 °C in a 100 mL beaker, vial contents added, held at 90 °C for 15 min; deep black oxide washed and decanted four times with distilled water.
- [source note 6] (recorded at TSTO Reports: A Variant source Capture of the Tetrasilver Tetroxide Dossier (8458b23075a0c581)) is a report-and-patent aggregation and does not itself contain a step-by-step synthesis, but it does not need to, since the preparation capture supplies one.
What a preparation account would cover
Tetrasilver tetroxide is a mixed-valence silver oxide in which silver appears in both the +1 and +3 oxidation states — the class described elsewhere in the corpus as Mixed-Valence Silver Oxide and linked to the Electron Jumping Compound / Molecular Battery Claim. A preparation account for such a compound would typically specify:
- the silver precursor or precursors used,
- the oxidant or oxidation route that drives silver to the +3 state,
- the reaction medium, temperature, and time,
- the isolation and drying steps,
- and any characterization (for example, diffraction or spectroscopy) offered as evidence that the intended phase was obtained.
None of these details are present in either capture. They are listed here only to define what the missing page would need to contain to be useful; they are not attributed to the source.
Why this matters
The compound's claimed behaviour — the Electron Jumping Compound / Molecular Battery Claim and the associated silver-ion release for Water Disinfection by Silver — depends on its mixed-valence structure (Mixed-Valence Silver Oxide, Silver(I,III) Oxide). Without a documented preparation route, a reader cannot assess purity, particle form, or whether the material described in the reports is the same material as the one named in the patents. The gap should be stated plainly rather than filled with plausible-sounding chemistry.
Why this is not an efficacy claim
Even a complete and reproducible preparation procedure would establish only that the compound can be made — a methods result. It would not establish that the compound performs as claimed in antimicrobial, water-treatment, or "molecular battery" applications. Those questions belong to Tetrasilver Tetroxide: The Electron-Jumping Claim, the Patent Set and the Bounded Evidence, which remains the authoritative page for the claim-versus-evidence gap. Preparation and efficacy are separate questions and should not be merged.
What would strengthen it
A capture containing the primary patent text for the TSTO preparation claims, or an independent replication of the Hammer & Kleiberg or Antelman procedures with characterization data (diffraction, spectroscopy), would strengthen this page. The procedures above are reported in the source; they are not independently verified here.
