Causal Mechanics (Kozyrev's Asymmetrical Mechanics)

"Causal mechanics" — also called "asymmetrical mechanics" — is the theoretical framework proposed by N. A. Kozyrev in his September 1967 paper "Possibility of Experimental Study of the Properties of Time" (JPRS report #45238). Its purpose is to restore the distinction between cause and effect that Kozyrev argues ordinary mechanics loses by treating time as a coordinate-like interval.

A second, archive-hosted account describes causal mechanics more generally as a proposed framework, attributed to N. A. Kozyrev, in which cause-and-effect relations are treated as having physical consequences that ordinary mechanics omits. On that account, the central move is to treat time not as a passive coordinate but as an active medium with properties — density, flow, or energetic content — that can in principle be detected and acted upon.

This page describes the framework as an account presented by archive-hosted texts. It is not a description of established physics, and no experimental support is claimed here.

The three axioms

Kozyrev builds the framework on three hypotheses:

  • Axiom I — time possesses a quality that distinguishes causes from effects (directivity, or "pattern").
  • Axiom II — causes and effects are always separated in space by an arbitrarily small but nonzero dx.
  • Axiom III — causes and effects are separated in time by an arbitrarily small but nonzero dt of fixed sign.

Key derivations

  • The ratio C₂ = dx/dt is defined and argued to be a pseudo-scalar — it changes sign under mirror reflection. From this Kozyrev derives his "basic theorem": a world with the opposite time pattern is equivalent to our world reflected in a mirror. See Time Pattern as a Pseudo-Scalar (C₂).
  • The time pattern is modelled by analogy with the relative rotation of an ideal gyroscope, leading to predicted additional forces along the axis of a rotating body (Eq. 6).
  • Kozyrev claims the third Newtonian law follows from causality and the time pattern.

  • In his first general inference, Kozyrev claims the causal axioms are confirmed by experiment, and that force fields transmitting influences should be regarded as discrete, non-overlapping points. He links Axiom II to a philosophical argument that material objects form a "calculated set" superimposed on the continuum of space.

Core claims as reported (general account)

The following is the framework's general shape as reported by the second, more general account, rather than a technical reconstruction:

  • Time as an active medium. Time is said to carry or transmit something physical, rather than merely ordering events.
  • Cause–effect asymmetry as physical. The directedness of causation is treated as a property of the world, not a convention.
  • A non-electromagnetic channel. The framework implies a signal channel distinct from known fields, by which processes are said to be detectable.

The second account (Shikhobalov's outline) does set out the postulates, the course-of-time constant c2, and detectors such as a nonsymmetric torsion balance, electric resistors and contact pairs of metals; those specifics are summarized on the relevant pages rather than repeated here.

Assessment

The framework is presented as Kozyrev's own construction. The source reports no independent test of the axioms, and the experimental support consists entirely of Kozyrev's own measurements. See Kozyrev Claims vs. Evidence.

Status and limitations

Causal mechanics conflicts with mainstream physics, where no accepted mechanism exists for time as an energy-carrying medium. The framework is non-mainstream and archive-hosted; hosting is not validation. The second account is a critical outline by L. S. Shikhobalov and itself notes points in Kozyrev's theory that remain unresolved.

Disambiguation from time crystals

Causal mechanics is not the same as the time crystal concept in condensed-matter physics. Time crystals are a peer-reviewed phenomenon studied through Floquet driving and realized as discrete time crystals, with experimental support. Causal mechanics is a separate framework with no accepted mechanism. The two must not be conflated.
