In the winter of 1928 the American press briefly took seriously a claim that a young Pennsylvania inventor had built a motor that ran without fuel. The device belonged to Lester Jennings Hendershot, then 29 years old, and the claim was that it drew its power from the earth's magnetic field and converted it into usable shaft work. The dossier assembled here collects the contemporary New York Times reports of February and November 1928 together with a much later retrospective report by a retired patent attorney, Edward O'Brian, published in Borderland Science in March–April 1989. Read together, they form a compact case study in how a free-energy claim is announced, witnessed, contested and then left unresolved.
What the device was claimed to be
Hendershot's machine was described in two incompatible ways within the same year. The February headlines call it a "fuelless motor." By 27 February, Major Thomas G. Lanphier, commandant at Selfridge Field in Michigan, was insisting that it was "not a motor at all but a generator." Hendershot himself, in the November report, called it a "magnetic induction" motor. The source never resolves this naming conflict, and it matters: a generator implies an external energy input being converted, while a motor implies work being extracted from a source the inventor could not identify.
The asserted mechanism was that the device drew energy "directly from the earth's field" and, through properties internal to the machine, transformed those currents into power deliverable at a propeller shaft. Hendershot's later and more specific account held that the machine obtained an initial impulse from a precharged magnetic core, and its "secondary and greatest power impulse by magnetic induction from the earth." That is a two-stage explanation, and it differs from the February account, which attributed the effect to a novel armature winding that drew energy from currents "constantly in the air or in the ground."
The two models and their reported performance
The physical construction is described in unusual detail for a press account, which makes it the most concrete part of the record.
The first model consisted of a ring magnet less than three inches in diameter. Coils were wound around the magnet "rigged as only Hendershot knows how to rig them," and a second set of coils passed through the center of the ring. Lanphier reported that when this first model was hooked to a small electric motor of the type used in a sewing machine, "it not only ran the motor but it burned it out." He also said the same arrangement kept a 6-watt lamp lit for 26 hours.
The second model was built around a ring magnet with an outside diameter of seven inches and an inside diameter of six inches. Lanphier helped build it, describing it as put together "out of stuff we picked up at the field." With it, he said, they lit two 110-watt lamps, and he added the much-quoted remark that he thought there was "enough electricity in this second model to kill a man." Critically, the source states that this larger model had not yet been hooked to a motor that would deliver power to a crankshaft. Whatever the second model demonstrated, it did not demonstrate shaft output.
Hendershot's November claim went considerably further: he said several motors had been built, and that one which "developed 60 horsepower" had run for two weeks without recharging the magnetic core. No measurement, test protocol or independent observer is attached to that figure in the source.
The compass behaviour
The most distinctive technical detail in the record is orientation dependence. The original model, it was reported, worked "somewhat on the principle of a compass": it would operate when pointing north–south but would not move when pointed east–west. Hendershot reportedly spent nearly two years trying to overcome this defect, and eventually brought a motor to Bettis Field that appeared to work in any orientation. That motor was installed in a small model airplane, which flew but crashed because it had not been rigged properly.
The compass detail is significant because it is the kind of specific, falsifiable behaviour that a purely fraudulent or purely imaginary device would not need to have. It is also consistent with the claim that the machine was interacting with the geomagnetic field — though it is equally consistent with a device that was simply sensitive to some other ambient field or to its own construction asymmetry. The source does not pursue the question.
The witnesses and what they actually said
The claim's public credibility rested on named witnesses rather than on data.
W.B. Stout, head of Stout Air Lines and designer of the all-metal tri-motored Ford Monoplane, said he had seen a demonstration in Pittsburgh two weeks before the 26 February article. He called it "very impressive" and "actually uncanny," and said the model he saw was about the size of the tiny motors used in vacuum cleaners. He relayed Hendershot's explanation — a "hereto unknown manner of winding the armature" — and added that "the small model appeared to operate exactly as Hendershot explained that it did." This is eyewitness testimony about apparent operation, not measurement of input and output.
A block test was held secretly in a hangar at Selfridge Field and witnessed by Lanphier, Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and others. Neither Lindbergh nor Lanphier would comment at length. Lanphier admitted they were experimenting with it and referred all questions to Hendershot, saying "he is the only one who knows all about it" and that "Lindbergh has nothing to do with it, although he saw it." William B. Mayo, chief engineer for the Ford Motor Company, was reported to be in conference with Lanphier, Hendershot and Peat.
D. Barr Peat, manager of Bettis Field at McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was the associate who first became enthusiastic after visiting the Hendershot home, and who arranged access to the airfield and to interested capitalists.
The radio-station rebuttal
The one quasi-controlled check reported in the source concerns the obvious alternative explanation: that the device was simply rectifying power from a nearby radio broadcast transmitter. Lanphier said the suggestion had occurred to them, and that they had run the device for 26 hours "when stations were going and when they were not" and "got the same results."
This is the strongest evidential element in the dossier, and it is worth being precise about its limits. It is a verbal report by an interested party, with no recorded schedule of when stations were transmitting, no field-strength measurement, no shielding test, and no independent replication. It rules out, at most, the crude version of the radio-power hypothesis as Lanphier understood it.
Origin story and the inventor
The human-interest material is colourful and should be read as colour rather than evidence. Hendershot's wife recounted that the conception of a machine operating from "earth currents" came to him in a dream several years earlier, but that he did not begin work until the previous November. The trigger was his four-year-old son's disappointment that a small toy airplane would not operate; Hendershot promised to build one that would. The miniature model was constructed from parts of a worn-out radio given to him by his uncle, over a few weeks of day-and-night work at a bench in the cellar near the furnace.
Hendershot was born in Hyndmann, Pennsylvania, and had limited formal schooling — a few months at Cornell University taking courses in mechanics. He had worked as a railroad fireman and engineer, in the mills near Pittsburgh, as a concrete inspector and in electrical work, and had been a bugler with a machine gun company during the war without going overseas. The source notes he had no other inventions to his credit. His stated idea was that the earth currents which produce the aurora borealis could be harnessed to produce power.
The Congressional patent proposal
In November 1928 it became known that Representative M. Clyde Kelly of Pennsylvania planned to seek a Congressional patent for the device if five scientists approved it as practical. A Congressional patent would have given the patentee full protection for 17 years. The source records the proposal and nothing further; whether the five scientists were ever approached, and what they concluded, is not stated.
Evidence assessment
The dossier is a historical record of claims, not a record of verification. Everything specific about performance rests on the assertions of the inventor and of Lanphier, who was closely involved in building the second model. There is no independent measurement, no efficiency figure, no controlled test data, and no reported replication by a disinterested party. The 60-horsepower and two-week-operation claims are unverified. The source itself notes that "in some quarters it was regarded with skepticism."
Two internal tensions are worth keeping visible. First, the motor-versus-generator disagreement is never resolved. Second, Hendershot's stated mechanism shifts between February (a novel armature winding drawing ambient earth or air currents) and November (a precharged core providing the initial impulse, with the earth providing the greater secondary impulse). A claim whose mechanism is described differently at different times is harder to test, because there is no single stated design to falsify.
The excerpt also breaks off mid-sentence in several places, including the 28 February article on the magnet and the east–west field shift. Nothing should be inferred from those boundaries about what the missing text did or did not contain.
Open questions
Several questions the source raises are left unanswered within it. Did the larger seven-inch model ever drive a crankshaft, or was it ever connected to a load beyond lamps? Was any independent test ever performed by someone with no stake in the outcome? What became of the Congressional patent effort and the five-scientist review? And what, if anything, did the east–west orientation problem turn out to be? These are flagged as unresolved in the record, not asserted to be absent from it.
Relation to the wider Hendershot thread
