The Sense of Being Stared At: And Other Unexplained Powers of the Human Mind

Rupert Sheldrake's The Sense of Being Stared At: And Other Aspects of the Extended Mind (Crown Publishers, 2003) argues that the feeling of being watched from behind, along with telepathy and precognition, is a normal human faculty rather than a paranormal anomaly. Sheldrake, a biologist who has spent his career working outside mainstream disciplinary boundaries, frames these phenomena as part of what he calls the "seventh sense" and offers an explanatory mechanism — the extended mind — to account for them. The book is a popular-science synthesis built on a large self-compiled dataset: roughly 4,000 case histories, 2,000 questionnaires, 1,500 telephone interviews, and a decade of experiments. It is not peer-reviewed primary literature, and its claims should be read as the author's own framework rather than independently established findings.

The extended mind as the explanatory frame

Sheldrake's central proposal is that minds are not confined to brains. Instead, he suggests, they stretch outward to touch the beings and objects that a person perceives. Once this extended influence is granted, he argues, a range of otherwise puzzling phenomena — telepathy, phantom limbs, the sense of being stared at — begin to make sense within a single framework. The extended mind is the load-bearing concept of the book: it is what converts a scattered set of reported experiences into a coherent thesis about the nature of perception and attention.

The framework also carries a claim about telepathy's origins. Sheldrake argues that telepathy depends on social bonds and evolved from the connections between members of animal groups such as flocks and packs. On this account, telepathy is not a rare anomaly but a residue of ordinary social attunement, which is why it is reported most often between people who are emotionally close.

The sense of being stared at

The staring sense is the book's title phenomenon. Sheldrake treats the common sensation of being the object of someone's attention as a real perceptual capacity rather than a subjective belief, and he supports it with animal and human experiments.

A goose study is the clearest positive result described. Five students observed geese, each student watching a different goose during three-minute watching periods and not watching during matched control periods. Video analysis reportedly showed that geese woke and looked toward the hidden observers on 10 occasions during looking periods, against only 3 such occasions during not-looking periods.

A raven experiment, by contrast, is reported as a failure. Working with the naturalist Tony Cross at a large rubbish heap in central Wales where hundreds of ravens gathered to feed, Sheldrake's team set up a blind, habituated the birds to it over a couple of weeks, and then looked intensely at ravens in a given area during one-minute periods while filming continuously, with matched one-minute control periods. The result was inconclusive: there were so many ravens and so much frenzied activity that no difference attributable to looking could be detected. Sheldrake states this plainly and recommends that future tests find situations in which the birds under observation are calm rather than busy and excited. This honest reporting of a negative result is a notable feature of the book's presentation.

Closed-circuit television and galvanic skin response

Sheldrake describes a more controlled parapsychological procedure that emerged from the late 1980s, in which subjects and lookers are placed in separate rooms and connected by closed-circuit television. Rather than asking subjects to guess whether they are being watched, the procedure records their galvanic skin response automatically, in the manner of a lie-detector test, while a remote looker either looks or does not look at the subject's image on a monitor. The design removes the subject's conscious judgment from the measurement, which is why Sheldrake treats it as a sophisticated approach to the staring question.

Telephone telepathy and the problem of selective memory

Telephone telepathy is the book's most developed experimental paradigm. In Sheldrake's procedure, a subject receives a call at a given time from one of four known potential callers, without knowing in advance which one will call. He reports clear, positive, and repeatable results from this design.

Much of the surrounding discussion concerns rival explanations. The most obvious is that people remember the times they guessed correctly and forget the times they were wrong, so that chance coincidence plus selective memory manufactures the illusion of telepathy. Sheldrake's proposed control is a logbook kept by the telephone: the person writes down any intuition about who is calling before answering, with caller-identification systems turned off or covered, and then records the date, time, actual caller, and whether the call was expected. Only unexpected calls count as relevant for investigating telepathy, and the logbook makes it possible to compute overall and per-caller success rates.

Sheldrake then addresses a second rival explanation: unconscious expectation. A person might be expecting a call around a particular time from a particular person without being aware of it, which would remove the need for telepathy. His response is that unconscious expectation is an elusive and possibly untestable hypothesis — and that in science an untestable hypothesis is a vice rather than a virtue. He adds a sharper point: if such an expectation really exists, it might itself be a product of telepathy rather than an alternative to it. This is a recurring structural move in the book — the skeptical explanation is either untestable or, if granted, can be folded back into the extended-mind framework.

N'kisi the parrot

The African grey parrot N'kisi, associated with Aimee Morgana, is presented as a test case for animal telepathy. In a formal analysis restricted to prespecified key words, independent scorers recorded 23 hits by a majority and 26 hits by at least one scorer. Sheldrake and Morgana, using a more flexible method that counted non-prespecified phrases, scored 32 hits. Sheldrake gives an example of the flexible scoring: in one trial Morgana was looking at a photograph of a car whose driver had his head out of the window, and N'kisi said, "Oh, oh, careful, you put your head out."

Sheldrake acknowledges that the formal analysis underestimated the number of hits, but defends the rigid criteria as necessary in a controversial area of research, because prespecified rules eliminate subjective judgment as far as possible — even if they are unfair to the parrot. He concludes that even under the rigid criteria N'kisi's scores were far above chance and highly significant statistically, and that the parrot really was picking up what was in Morgana's mind telepathically. The gap between the 23-hit formal score and the 32-hit flexible score is the clearest methodological tension in the book: rigor and claimed effect size pull in opposite directions.

Precognition and the 9/11 thought experiment

Sheldrake treats precognition — literally "knowing in advance" — as inherently paradoxical, because a precognition cannot be confirmed as such until after the event it refers to has occurred. Before the event, it is only a possibility, however urgent or convincing it feels, and usually too vague to serve as a detailed prediction.

He develops this with a thought experiment about a premonition hotline or website to which anyone could report a premonition or potentially precognitive dream as soon as it happened. He imagines that before the morning of September 11, 2001, there could well have been a surge of reports, and asks what such a surge would have indicated. Even assuming that everyone with unusual and disturbing dreams before the New York and Washington attacks had reported them, he argues it would probably have been difficult or impossible to make a specific prediction of planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A predominance of dreams about plane crashes and collapsing buildings might have indicated the general kind of disaster, but the details would likely have been too varied to predict where or when the planes would strike. Some dreams were about the World Trade Center, but others were about different New York buildings such as the Empire State Building, or about other cities such as Philadelphia. Only afterward could their significance be recognized.

Sheldrake also notes that precognitions tend to be overestimated through selective memory, for two reasons: most potential precognitions are never recorded, and the ones that are recorded are matched against events after the fact.

The milk letdown study

Appendix B describes a study of the milk letdown reflex in nursing mothers, carried out for Sheldrake by Katy Barber, an experienced midwife. Nineteen breastfeeding women each received two sets of notebooks and undertook to fill them in over eight weeks while breastfeeding. The mother carried one notebook when away from her baby and recorded the times at which her milk let down, along with comments about her feelings. The baby's caregiver kept the other notebook and recorded the times at which the baby cried, seemed hungry, or showed other signs of distress. The study's logic is to compare the two records for correspondence between the mother's letdown times and the baby's distress at a distance.

Historical antecedents

Sheldrake traces the experimental tradition behind his claims to nineteenth-century mesmerism. He cites James Esdaile, a Scottish government surgeon in Calcutta who in the 1840s performed more than 3,000 operations using hypnotism as anesthesia. In one experiment, Esdaile hypnotized and blindfolded a young Indian man who had previously undergone surgery under hypnotic anesthesia, then had an assistant place substances — including salt, gentian, brandy, and a lime — into Esdaile's own mouth in arbitrary order. The subject reportedly reported the taste of a half-rotten lime correctly, making a corresponding wry face, and was equally correct with the other substances.

Similar experiments were reported by other doctors and by clergymen. The Reverend Andrew Gilmour of Greenock, Scotland, mesmerized a servant each evening until he could put her into a trance in under a minute, and reported that she could identify what he tasted — soda, salt, sugar, milk, water — from another room, and felt it when his foot was pricked, his hair pulled, or his skin pinched. Alfred Russel Wallace, co-originator with Charles Darwin of evolution by natural selection, tried such experiments as a young schoolmaster in Leicester, mesmerizing boys and even the headmaster, and reported that he seemed able to merge his mind with that of a hypnotized subject, with the subject reacting at a distance to sugar or salt in Wallace's mouth or to a pinch or prick.

Limitations and unresolved questions

The evidence in the book is mixed and largely self-reported. The telephone telepathy procedure and the N'kisi trials are presented with statistical significance claims, but the raven staring experiment is explicitly inconclusive, and the goose result rests on a small number of events. The book is a popular synthesis rather than peer-reviewed primary literature, and its central mechanism — the extended mind — is not directly testable in the way Sheldrake demands of the unconscious-expectation alternative.

Two internal tensions are worth keeping visible. First, Sheldrake rejects the "paranormal" label while describing phenomena that mainstream science classifies as such; the reframing is rhetorical as much as empirical. Second, he criticizes unconscious expectation as potentially untestable, yet his own extended-mind mechanism is itself not directly testable — a symmetry he does not fully address. The N'kisi scoring gap (23 versus 32 hits) shows how sensitive the claimed effect size is to scoring rules.
