Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are chemically reactive molecules and radicals derived from oxygen. In the Min Xing et al. dossier (Min Xing et al., Sr-Ca-Ba-TiO₃ Toothpaste: Whitening and Remineralization Dossier), the two species named are:
- Superoxide anion (•O₂⁻) — a radical anion formed by one-electron reduction of O₂.
- Hydroxyl radical (•OH) — a highly reactive radical formed from peroxide chemistry.
The patent CN119430910 — Piezoelectric Ceramic Powder for Whitening and Mineralizing Teeth also mentions "hydrogen peroxide" among the "active oxygen" species generated.
Role in the BSCT claim
ROS are the active agents in the Piezoelectric Catalysis (Piezocatalysis) claim: BSCT is said to generate •O₂⁻ and •OH in situ under mechanical vibration, and these species are claimed to degrade organic stains (coffee, tea, tobacco) and to inhibit cariogenic bacteria. The dossier reports that "obvious superoxide radical peaks and hydroxyl radical peaks can be captured in BSCT powder" after ultrasonic treatment, and that indigo carmine dye decolorizes under the same conditions.
Evidence status
The dossier shows the authors' description of radical peaks and a dye-decolorization observation, but not the spectra, quantification, or controls. The identity of the radicals and their yield are asserted rather than demonstrated in the material shown.
