Piezoelectric catalysis (often shortened to piezocatalysis) is the generation of chemically reactive species — typically Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) such as superoxide (•O₂⁻) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals — when a piezoelectric material is mechanically strained. The mechanical deformation produces an internal polarization field that separates charge carriers; the separated charges then drive redox reactions at the material surface.
Mechanism as described in the source
In the Min Xing et al. dossier (Min Xing et al., Sr-Ca-Ba-TiO₃ Toothpaste: Whitening and Remineralization Dossier), the mechanism is stated for BSCT (Ba₀.₉Sr₀.₀₅Ca₀.₀₅TiO₃) as follows: BSCT "can generate •O₂⁻ and •OH in situ under mechanical vibration," and the piezoelectric polarization field is invoked both for stain degradation and for antibacterial action. The mechanical stimulus in the intended application is the vibration of toothbrushing; in the reported laboratory tests it is ultrasound.
Reported evidence in the dossier
- After ultrasonic treatment, "obvious superoxide radical peaks and hydroxyl radical peaks can be captured in BSCT powder." The dossier does not name the spectroscopic technique or reproduce the spectra.
- Indigo carmine decolorization: with the ultrasonic instrument set to 2 W for 40 minutes, the blue color of the indigo carmine solution in the piezoelectric powder group gradually faded, and the absorbance at 600 nm decreased over time. Indigo carmine is a standard dye probe for oxidative degradation.
Limitations
The dossier shows only the authors' summary of these results. There is no dose–response, no control comparison table, no quantification of radical yield, and no independent replication. The step from dye decolorization in a cuvette to stain removal on a tooth surface in a mouth is not demonstrated in the material shown.
