"Chiral shielding of time effects" is the claim, in N. A. Kozyrev's September 1967 paper, that the chirality of organic molecules affects the disturbing influences on his asymmetrical torsion balance. Two halves are named:
- Sugar (sucrose) — an organic substance consisting only of right-handed molecules — is said to shield the balance "to a considerable extent."
- Turpentine — an organic substance of left-handed molecules — "evidently" causes the opposite effect. The word "evidently" marks this half as weaker still.
This is the entire evidential basis for the claim in the supplied windows. No sample masses, geometry, distances, quantities, controls, or error analysis accompany it, and no independent replication is reported there.
The instrument the claim modifies
The shielding claim only makes sense against the behavior of the balance it modifies. Kozyrev describes modifying earlier torsion weights by lengthening the suspension filament of one weight up to 1.5 m, so that the device came to resemble a gravitational variometer, with the difference that the balance arm could move freely around a horizontal axis. The system was grounded and shielded by a metal housing to avert electrostatic effects; weights were of the order of 5–20 g. The disturbances being shielded against
The processes reported to deflect the weights were varied: heating of a body; burning of an electric tube; cooling of a previously heated body; operation of an electrical battery closed through resistance; dissolving of various salts in water; and even the movement of a man's head. Nonstationary processes are described as particularly strong — the blinking of an electric bulb is singled out. Because of these processes occurring near the weights and in nature, the weights "behave themselves very erratically," and their zero point often becomes displaced, shifting by the indicated amounts and interfering considerably with observations. The sugar/turpentine statement is offered as a remedy for exactly this erratic disturbance.
Reported figures
The paper gives several quantitative figures, all attributed to Kozyrev and none independently checked in the supplied windows:
- The calculated angle of turning of the asymmetrical torsion balances under the effect of "additional forces of the time pattern" should be of the order of 14°.
- In contactless effects over a distance, large deflections were obtained that reached the indicated values.
- The stable deflections appeared in a discrete state with a power of one fourth of the full effect: ≈3°5′.
- A reversible process near one weight produced a turning of the balance arm toward the meridian by a small angle ≈0.3°, with sensitivity corresponding to 9° for full-magnitude time-pattern forces; the quantized series ½a, a, 2a… is reported.
- Time-pattern forces developed by vibration of the mounting point do not disappear immediately when the vibration stops but remain in the system for a considerable period. Assuming exponential decay e^(−t/τ₀), estimates were made of the relaxation time τ₀. It was reported that τ₀ does not depend on the mass of the body but on its density ρ.
The density-dependent relaxation result is a distinct reported finding from the chiral-shielding claim, though both belong to the same paper and the same instrument. The captured τ₀ data table is truncated at "for…" in the supplied windows.
Theoretical frame: causal mechanics
A separate captured commentary supplies the framework in which the shielding claim sits. In Kozyrev's causal mechanics, Postulate V distinguishes cause from effect by rotation sense: if the rotation appears clockwise to an observer placed along the additional-force vector, the body is an effect; if anticlockwise, it is a cause. The commentary states that "the distinction between causes and effects in causal mechanics is thus related to the distinction between the right and the left" — the same left/right vocabulary that the sugar/turpentine claim uses at the chemical level. The commentary also flags an unresolved tension in Kozyrev's own writing: he states that there is no time lag between the forces of action and reaction, meaning cause and effect act on each other simultaneously, while also holding Postulate III on a nonzero time lag between cause and effect. Internal tensions
Two tensions sit close together and should be kept distinct:
- "Not shielded" versus "can be shielded." The paper states that biological relationships and telepathy "are not shielded and hence have the property for the transmission of influences through time," while also reporting that the balance can be shielded from disturbing influences by sugar. These concern different things — the transmission of influences versus the disturbance of an instrument — but the shared word invites confusion.
- Simultaneity versus relativity. Kozyrev asserts that time "is not propagated but appears immediately everywhere," and that instantaneous transfer of information through time "should not contradict the special theory of relativity," on the grounds that simultaneity of effects through time is realized in the coordinate system associated with the source of the effects. This is an assertion, not a derivation.
Assessment
The chiral-shielding statement is a single author's qualitative report inside a broader speculative program. The theoretical apparatus of causal mechanics is not accepted physics, and the commentary itself flags an internal inconsistency.
