A bone adhesive, or bio-glue, is a material intended to bond bone fragments together in place of, or alongside, mechanical fixation such as metal plates and screws. The concept appears in the source archive Bone Glue dossier through the specific product Bone-02, an injectable adhesive attributed to a team led by Lin Xianfeng.
The problem the concept addresses
The dossier's press material frames the motivation clinically: fixing shattered bone fragments with conventional hardware requires a large incision to implant steel plates and screws, and a second surgery to remove the implants. A glue that could be injected into a fracture site and that resorbs as the bone heals would avoid both. The specific technical obstacle named is the moist, blood-rich environment of a fracture site, where most adhesives fail to set or bond.
Claimed mechanism and properties
The dossier attributes the design inspiration to oysters, which adhere to intertidal surfaces underwater. The scientific antecedent cited is the characterization of oyster cement as an organic–inorganic hybrid — see Oyster Cement. The reported properties of Bone-02 are a maximum bonding force over 400 pounds, shear strength about 0.5 MPa, compressive strength around 10 MPa, and fixation in 2–3 minutes.
Evidence status
The dossier contains no primary study of Bone-02. The performance figures come from press reports, with no study design, controls, animal model or clinical registration described. The claim that the material is naturally absorbed is asserted without composition or degradation data. The concept should be read as a reported product claim rather than an established clinical technology. See Bone Glue Claims vs. Evidence: Press Numbers, Patent Abstracts and the Absence of Primary Data.
Distinction from the dossier's patent portfolio
The dossier's eighteen patent entries concern decellularized ECM scaffolds, mineralization control, osteoclast targeting and tumor metastasis — adjacent bone-biology subjects, not adhesives. The dossier does not state that Bone-02 is covered by any of them. See Decellularized Extracellular Matrix Scaffold and Osteoclast-Targeting Nanomaterials.
