Accelerated radionuclide deactivation is the applied claim of the Vysotskii–Kornilova dossier: that growing microbiological cultures can reduce the radioactivity of radionuclide solutions — chiefly Cs-137 — faster than natural radioactive decay, by transmuting the radioactive isotope to a stable one. The named reaction is Cs137 + p = Ba138.

The control baseline is stated as the "usual" law of nuclear decay, with a Cs-137 lifetime of about 30 years.
The Cs/Sr joint-transmutation paper
The paper by Kornilova, Vysotskii, Gaidamaka and Gladchenko reports a decrease in cesium and strontium content in the liquid of 20% and 55% respectively, stated to go beyond the statistical error, and a two- to threefold increase in yttrium in optimal experimental bioreactors. It also records a significant caveat: yttrium and barium were found in a control bioreactor that contained no added biomass, which the authors attribute most likely to cross-inoculation from the experimental bioreactors during periodic opening for pH sampling and glucose addition.
Application claims
The ScienceDirect highlights state that "microbiological deactivation" may be used for deactivation of Chernobyl and Fukushima areas. This is stated as a possibility, not as a demonstrated remediation. The patents WO2015156698A1 — Method for Purifying Water of Radionuclides and US2023143790A1 — Cleaning Radioactive Liquids and Radioactively Charged Surfaces describe methods for purifying water of radionuclides and cleaning radioactive liquids and surfaces.
Evidence status
