Metal Power: The Soul Life of the Planets is a 1991 book by Alison Davidson that treats the metals as carriers of planetary and cosmic qualities rather than as inert chemical elements. Its organizing claim is that each metal belongs to a planet — silver to the Moon, gold to the Sun, quicksilver to Mercury, copper to Venus, iron to Mars, tin to Jupiter, lead to Saturn, and the radioactive metals to the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — and that this correspondence can be known through an alchemical-spiritual mode of cognition rather than through laboratory chemistry alone. The book is dedicated to "the Mercurial Spirit," and its chapters move outward from the familiar metals of tradition to the radioactive elements that Davidson associates with the modern discovery of the outer planets.
The book's thesis
Davidson opens by arguing that human civilization and the metals have developed together, and that a purely materialist account of substances as ordered accumulations of protons, electrons and neutrons cannot explain what she calls the secret power of metals. Her stated aim is a synthesis of science and spirit: she holds that earlier stages of human consciousness were directly in touch with cosmic forces, that this perception was buried by the modern discursive approach to phenomena, and that it can now be renewed in a form that combines the two. The alchemical operation of transmuting base metals into gold, in her reading, images an inner process of spiritual transformation; gold is described as the "earthy sun" and as incarnated light, so that the same essential quality is recognized both in the metal and in the heavenly sphere. She traces this framing to the Emerald Tablet attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, and quotes Stanislas Klossowski de Rola on gold as the "Sun of matter" and as an analogy to the perfection the alchemist seeks.
Gold, silver and quicksilver
The gold chapter is the most developed in the available text. Davidson describes gold as incorruptible: where other metals are destroyed by weathering and rust, gold remains stable, and she cites Wilhelm Pelikan's view that it does not lose its cosmic aspect. She attributes to gold an inward equilibrium of forces that makes it hard to dissolve or combine, noting that turning it into a salt requires a strong mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. Gold, she writes, is present in minute quantities nearly everywhere — in the atmosphere, seawater, granite, basalt and diabase — infusing the earth-sphere with homeopathic qualities. Its three principal properties are given as light, elastic fluidity and weight: it shines like the sun yet is heavy, with a density nineteen times that of water. Its light quality is linked to silica and to veins of gold quartz ore alongside clear rock crystal, while its inner heaviness is linked to pyrite veins in crystalline primeval rock that penetrate unusually deep into the earth, described alchemically as the leaden chaos of Saturn in which the life of the sun and of gold is hidden. Pelikan is again the authority for the geographical claim that Africa is the center of gravity for gold in the earth, and Davidson adds deserts and the old geological lands — South Africa, Australia, India, Canada, Scandinavia and the mountains of the Americas — as typical settings.
Silver is presented as the metal of the Moon, reflecting solar light into human souls much as it images the world in the photographic process. Quicksilver is presented as Mercury's liquid metal and as the universal dissolving agent for other metals, the planetary messenger of the gods rendered as a substance. The chapter opens with a passage from the Andalusian mystic Muhyi 'd-Din ibn 'Arabi on forms reflected in a single mirror, and with the speculation that in the earth's youth all metals may have flowed liquid in veins through its body before cooling over vast ages.
Copper, iron, tin and lead
The remaining traditional metals are treated more briefly in the captured text. Copper is described as a beautiful substance ruled by Venus, goddess of beauty and life, and as one that can remarkably advance agriculture. Iron is the great metal of Mars, which Davidson says has entrapped an unsuspecting humanity with its terrific power. Tin is Jupiter's thunderbolt, forming lightning-shaped veins in the earth and emitting a puzzling scream when bent — the phenomenon usually called the tin cry. Lead is externally cold like its ruler Saturn but has a surprising inner warmth revealing a profound energy; Davidson notes both its toxicity and her claim that it can protect against more terrible poisons.
The lead chapter is the most historically detailed. Lead was smelted from ores by the Greeks and Etruscans, coined by the Chinese and Romans, and used by the Romans for extensive aqueducts; lead water pipes recovered after two thousand years were found in excellent condition, though Davidson cites Viktor Schauberger's view that the earlier wooden pipes and stone channels were far healthier. She records that the emperor Titus was said to have had some fifty thousand slaves working the Spanish lead mines, and that lead's weathering resistance made it a roofing and water-tank material in the Middle Ages and, alloyed with tin, the basis of pewter. An esoteric use is drawn from Mellie Uyldert's Metal Magic: a Dutch New Year's eve custom of melting lead and pouring it into cold water, reading the coming year from the shapes it forms, a practice Davidson connects to Saturn's long rule over augury and fate. Modern uses listed include cable and tank coatings, protective paints, sheeting and plate, batteries and accumulators, munitions, and the textile, ceramics and pesticide industries.
Against this, Davidson reports an epidemic of lead poisoning in the United States through industrial contamination, flaking paint and lead-laden dust, quoting the San Francisco Chronicle of 23 August 1991 to the effect that American towns were literally painted with lead before 1950. She notes that chronic ingestion of small quantities over long periods causes nerve and brain damage, and identifies the anti-knock compound lead-tetraethyl — promoted by oil executives in the 1920s despite warnings from health authorities and now banned from most gasoline — as a major source of lead pollution. The chapter thus holds lead's durability and utility together with its toxicity without resolving the tension.
The outer planets and the radioactive metals
The closing chapters turn to uranium, Neptune and Pluto. Davidson quotes the astrologer Dane Rudhyar's description of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as ambassadors of the galaxy, linking the small solar system centered on the Sun and bounded by Saturn's orbit to the larger galactic system, and Stephen Arroyo on Uranus as the extension of perception into realms of superconscious mentality. Uranus is associated with the electrical energies that have transformed modern culture; Neptune with a boundless etheric ocean from which all life emerges; Pluto with the underworld rising to confront humanity through radioactivity.
The Pluto material is the most explicitly attributed. Davidson draws on Walter Russell's Atomic Suicide for the claim that plutonium is the most deadly of the radioactive metals, losing only half its radioactivity in 23,000 years and attacking the bone marrow where blood corpuscles form; Russell is quoted as warning that strontium and similar "super calciums" could cause defective skeletal births and deaths on a scale beyond any known plague. Davidson adds that radioactivity attacks reproductive cells, the domain she assigns to Scorpio, and reproduces a statement from the National Academy of Sciences holding that any radiation reaching reproductive cells causes mutations passed to succeeding generations, that no minimum threshold must be exceeded for mutations to occur, and that the harm is cumulative across the accumulated gonad dose. She extends the concern to all species, arguing that alteration of the seed pattern itself threatens regeneration and widespread sterility. Russell is also the source for the claim that shielding against uranium and plutonium is only a temporary expedient and that the shields will eventually become as dangerous as the cause, with a mass migration and a leukemia scourge to follow.
Two further themes close the captured text. Davidson criticizes biotechnology's creation of transgenic goats, sheep and cows by injecting embryos with human genes to produce drugs in their milk, framing the practice as a scientifically respectable echo of the experimental human-animal mutation she attributes to the last days of Atlantean sorcery. And she cites Wilhelm Reich's observation, made during desert rain-making work, that the atmosphere after atomic tests was filled with what he called DOR, or Deadly Orgone Radiation, apparently draining life-force from the atmosphere, the earth and living beings. Michael Jones is quoted on nuclear power as a frightening symbol of death and decay, and Davidson contrasts nature's interplay of centripetal building and centrifugal destroying motion with a nuclear technology she says concentrates only on the destructive force of explosion.
Evidence and its limits
The book offers no experimental data of its own. Its metal chapters rest on alchemical tradition, astrological correspondence and anthroposophical natural science, chiefly Pelikan, and are framed within an esoteric-cosmological register rather than a testable one. The radiation and lead-poisoning material is different in kind: it is attributed to named external sources — Russell's Atomic Suicide, a National Academy of Sciences statement, and a 1991 San Francisco Chronicle report — and is the most empirically grounded portion of the text, though Davidson's book is itself a secondary compilation of those sources. The plutonium half-life figure of 23,000 years is presented as Russell's claim and differs from the standard physical value for Pu-239 of roughly 24,100 years; the transgenic-animal passage is a rhetorical-esoteric argument rather than an empirical finding.
