Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂)

Molybdenum disulfide is a compound of molybdenum and sulfur and the most widely studied member of the transition-metal dichalcogenide family. It is the central material of the source dossier recorded at Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoflowers: A source Dossier (Provisional Record), which is organized around MoS₂ nanoflowers and experimental 2D MoS₂.

Structure

MoS₂ is layered. Each layer is a sandwich of a molybdenum plane between two sulfur planes, and the layers stack through weak van der Waals interactions — the same structural motif that makes graphite and other layered solids easy to cleave into thin sheets. This is why MoS₂ can be exfoliated down to monolayers and why it belongs to the two-dimensional materials family described in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs).

Bulk versus monolayer properties

The electronic character of MoS₂ changes with thickness. Bulk MoS₂ is an indirect-bandgap semiconductor; a single monolayer is a direct-bandgap semiconductor. That transition is the main reason monolayer MoS₂ attracted sustained research interest as a 2D semiconductor. Bulk MoS₂ is also a well-established solid lubricant, valued for low friction and stability in vacuum and at elevated temperature.

Morphologies

Beyond flat sheets, MoS₂ is grown and synthesized in a range of nanoscale forms, including nanoparticles, nanosheets, and hierarchical structures. The flower-like form — thin sheets assembled into petal-like aggregates — is described in MoS₂ Nanoflower Morphology and is the morphology named in the source dossier title.

Applications discussed in the literature

Lubrication and catalysis are the two applications most commonly associated with MoS₂, with edge sites of nanostructured MoS₂ often discussed as catalytically active. The dossier recorded here also covers hydrogen evolution catalysis, supercapacitors, photothermal therapy, photocatalysis, sensing, and toxicity studies, as reported in its cited sources.

Evidence status

This page states general material-science context. The specific claims, procedures, and measurements in the source dossier on MoS₂ nanoflowers are reported in the cited sources and are summarized at Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoflowers: A source Dossier (Provisional Record); they are not independently verified here.
