Louis Giovanni Valerio Rota (1886–1951), an Italian-born inventor who worked in France and later in England, left behind a small set of patent specifications, newspaper reports and fragmentary notes describing currents in the earth, radio signalling through the ground, and a body held aloft without a mechanical motor. This dossier gathers those documents together with an interpretive essay by Mike Watson and a short construction note on Rota's lamps. The material is documentary: it records what Rota and his contemporaries claimed, and it also records how little independent testing stands behind those claims.
Who Rota was
Rota was born in northern Italy in 1886 and died at Genesieux near Valence, France, in 1951. Watson describes him as a Frenchman of Italian origin whose early life is poorly documented. He worked on early aviation, on wireless communication, and on what Watson calls anti-gravitation. Because he was a contemporary of Marconi, Watson assumes Marconi's work shaped his thinking, though no direct link is documented. Rota published very little: two short booklets based on seminars, one written with a medical collaborator named Kresser, and another that sketched his programme only in general terms. That thin written record is one reason the dossier leans so heavily on patents and press coverage.
By 1917 Rota was living at Clarence House, Park Road, Teddington, in Middlesex, and filing British patents. Watson reports, on the authority of the "Layman" articles, that during the First World War Rota's Paris laboratory was broken into and vandalised by people apparently seeking his secret, and that Rota himself was injured before being invited to London to work for the British Admiralty on military uses of electric waves. The patent addresses corroborate the move to Teddington; the rest of that story rests on the Layman account.
The universal currents idea
Rota's central notion, as Watson reconstructs it, is that electric potential is not a single quantity but a property of whatever carries it. On this view a current is a mixture of several components, and different metals are each more sensitive to one particular component, so a metal acts as a kind of separator. Rota called these components "universal currents" because he held that each one exists everywhere in nature, that any mixture of them carries an electric potential, and that they always circulate as an ionic current. Watson compares the metal emanations to the ions familiar to chemists, while noting that Rota attributed further properties to them.
Watson's reconstruction is explicitly tentative. He writes that one "can assume" Rota extended the idea to natural telluric currents, treating them as metallic emanations rising from depth and carrying electromagnetic energy, and he likens the picture to ionisation. He also relays, through A.R. Heaver's "Layman" articles, a claim attributed to Rota via Slade: that metal ore deposits "grew" into the ground from the universal currents, so that a mine usually carries the current associated with its nearby ore. Watson reads this as suggesting an ionic current that deposits metal over geological time. These are interpretations offered with hedges, not findings.
Ground radio and the blocks
Rota detected soil potentials with deeply buried metal probes that he called blocks, made of laminated strip. Watson supposes Rota used a spark-gap transmitter of the kind found in Marconi's early radios, and that Rota noticed signals sent through the ground by grounded metal probes radiated differently in different directions. From Rota's notes it appears he worked extensively on the ship detector described in his 1918 patent.
Two directional effects are reported. Signals transmitted through the ground were found to travel better in some directions than others, and the effect depended on the metal used: reception improved when the receiver's buried antenna was made of the same metal as the transmitter's. Watson suggests the signal entered the ground as a directional emanation from the metal, strongly influenced by the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. Rota also found that placing a block of metal in the transmission circuit slowly improved transmission in a given direction, a process he called synchronization. Watson notes that by 1919 Rogers and Jones held patents on ground-based radio communication whose diagrams are very close to Rota's experiments, and speculates that the high voltages of spark transmission may have enhanced metal radiation through something like ionic diffusion.
GB 128,624 — concentrating electric waves
British patent 128,624, "Apparatus for the Concentration of Electric Waves in a Single Direction or upon a Fixed Point," was filed on 14 August 1917 by Luigi Rota of Teddington, Professor, and Ernesto Binetti of Rome, and accepted on 3 July 1919. This specification resolves an identifier that earlier Rota material left unresolved.
The stated objects are a list of desired capabilities rather than demonstrated results: concentrating a wave or train of waves on a chosen point; guaranteeing that each station communicates only with its appointed counterpart without interception; allowing several stations to operate close together without mutual disturbance while still determining the direction of an incoming station; suppressing losses caused by atmospheric electricity; permitting omnidirectional transmission when the apparatus is switched out of circuit; increasing capacity and fixing phase and intensity so that electric power might be sent wirelessly at a distance, producing a Joule effect remotely; and transmitting a wave constituted so that it reveals when a magnetic body has come between transmitter and receiver, whether on land, on water or under water.
The apparatus consists of two, three or more cylinders joined in series by reciprocal induction. Each cylinder connects to a battery, accumulator or dynamo that is common to all of them but reversed in polarity for each alternate cylinder. Working on transformer principles, the first stage raises intensity, the second raises electromotive force, and the third can equalise the two, with the same relations available in reverse. The specification states that the battery's purpose is to reconstitute all the force lost to passive losses, resistances and other causes, and to restore to the wave's energy its constitutive and primitive property. The cylinders are said to increase capacity and reduce resistance. The drawings show the units arranged horizontally, vertically or inclined, with circular, square, rectangular, triangular or other cross-sections, built from sheet metal or from parallel wires or bands.
GB 129,059 — the ship and mine detector
Patent 129,059, "Improved Means for Signalling the Presence of Explosive Mines, Submarine or other Ships, Icebergs and other Bodies," was filed on 28 May 1918 by Luigi Giovanni Valerio Rota of 55 Eardley Crescent, Earl's Court, London, and accepted on 30 June 1919. Rota declares in the specification that he has discovered telluric or earth currents which produce telluric magnetic vortices in the earth, and that the presence or intensity of these currents becomes visible when they encounter a magnetic or para-magnetic body, however small. On that basis the apparatus is claimed to reveal the presence and direction of mines, submarines, ships, icebergs and similar bodies, and possibly their speed.
The construction is described in mechanical detail. A wooden cylinder or casing is hermetically closed and may be enclosed in a pointed outer iron casing when used in water, where the iron reduces resistance and withstands pressure. The casing is carried by rods fixed to a vertical shaft on a ball bearing, itself carried by a vertical rod that may be telescopic and fixed with a set screw. A second ball bearing lets the whole assembly hang vertically, so the instrument can be oriented about a central vertical axis and raised or lowered, and it may be suspended at a ship's bows or side.
Inside the casing, concentric with it, sits a rotating wooden cylinder carried on radial arms and ball bearings. It is driven by clockwork in a compartment at one end, or through a bevel wheel and pinion on a flexible shaft led up to the deck. The specification states plainly that an electric motor cannot be used in that compartment because it would prevent accurate observations. The rotating cylinder has a surface velocity of four to nine metres per second and is wound with insulated copper or soft iron wire in one or more layers forming a closed circuit. The patent presents this as a working instrument; no independent trial is reported in the dossier.
FR508472 — suspension in the atmosphere
French patent 508,472, "Procédé et appareil pour maintenir un corps en suspension dans l'atmosphère" (method and apparatus for maintaining a body suspended in the atmosphere, based on electric and magnetic forces), was filed by Louis Rota and Georges Milienne and published on 13 October 1920. Its stated principle is an apparatus in which electric and magnetic forces are distributed under conditions that respond to the electrical and magnetic forces of the atmosphere and the earth, so that the resulting repulsions hold the unit suspended or make it fall very slowly. The active parts are good metallic conductors such as silver, copper and soft iron; the remaining pieces are wood, aluminium or other light materials. The drawings show a cylindrical body, though the specification allows any suitable shape. Figure 1 is an elevation with parts cut away and Figure 2 a plan.
The 1915 and 1922 press claims
On 13 September 1915 the front page of Le Matin carried a Marseille dispatch about an Italian engineer said to have solved the problem of absolute immobility of a body in space. The device was reported to remain motionless in the air at heights of five hundred, six hundred or even a thousand metres, to carry considerable weight, to be given prodigious speed in any direction and stopped at any point, all without a mechanical motor and simply by using radio waves. The reported principle was a special distribution of electric and magnetic forces producing repulsion and attraction sufficient to hold the device between 400 and 1,000 metres for several hours, forty at most. In winds not exceeding fourteen metres per second it would hold its position; in stronger winds it would rise vertically above the air current and resume its immobility. The dossier notes that the article gives no details of the experiments said to have already produced results, and that French newspaper archives of the period contain no other source on the matter. Jacques Martial, editorial secretary of Le Petit Marseillais, met Rota in his workshop and published an account on 12 September 1915, but did not attend a demonstration.
On 11 January 1922 the Daily Herald reported that a company was about to be launched to develop Rota's invention, with claims of travel from England to North America in thirty hours, speeds of 250 kilometres per hour, the solution of absolute immobility in space, the suppression of parasitic or wandering waves, and a new materialisation of the wave that could be directed at will. The article hoped that experiments planned in Marseille would be definitive. These are promotional claims, not verified results.
The Rota effect and the lamps
A first-person account describes listening in 1959 to Rota's currents on a dug-up block at the site of his laboratory, hearing clicks with a half-second delay after breaking contact, and noting that on some days nothing was heard at all. The writer asks whether the clicks are purely random and fully explainable by electromagnetic laws, and answers that apparently they are not, adding that Rota spent nearly forty years listening to such clicks through more sophisticated devices. This is anecdotal testimony without controls, and the admission that the effect sometimes fails is itself a caution.
A separate note, reproduced by Watson from a document no longer in the possession of the site that published it, describes the construction of Rota's lamps. The lamps were connected to small power supplies charged by connections to buried supplies and produced a cold white light. The glow resembled ordinary electrical ionisation but is attributed to a different mechanism. The note gives dimensions in millimetres, states that wire strips exceed 100 mm so they can reach the blocks, and specifies pure glass clips, a base cup, pins insulated in glass and fixed in ebonite, and filaments as pure as possible, with a sample of each filament quality reserved. The document is dated 8 August 1838, which predates Rota's birth by decades and is almost certainly a transcription error; the dossier flags it as an internal inconsistency. The note is a construction specification and makes no efficacy claim.
What the record does and does not show
The patents describe apparatus and assert effects; they are not evidence that the effects occur. The press reports of 1915 and 1922 lack experimental detail, and the 1915 article itself concedes that no account of the experiments was given. Watson's interpretive framework — metallic emanations, ionic jets, ore growth, metal-dependent directionality — is presented by its author with repeated conditional phrasing, and should be read as a proposed reading of Rota's notes rather than an established mechanism. Rota's own written output was small, which limits how far his theory can be checked against his own words. The dossier also notes that a century passed before magnetic levitation reached commercial application in MAGLEV, a technology whose principle differs from the one Rota proposed.
