Zuccarelli's stated theory is that the human auditory system is a sound emitter: it produces a reference sound that combines with incoming sound to form an interference pattern inside the ear, whose nature encodes the direction of the incoming sound. The dossier's own Wikipedia-derived text states that no evidence supports the use of acoustic emissions for sound localization, and that binaural recording and HRTF synthesis adequately explain the same perceptual effects. Two letters in New Scientist in 1983 (Baxter and Kemp) cast doubt on the theory and on Zuccarelli's scientific abilities.

The dossier's Wikipedia-derived text states that "Holophonic is patented and registered by Umberto Maggi (Italy)," while the patents listed name Zuccarelli.
