The patent carries a single claim, classified in Class 244–43.

The specification opens by describing the invention as relating to roadable airplanes, and states its core idea plainly: the principal lift for airborne use is to come from the shape and configuration of the body, without substantial use of wings. The stated objects are practical rather than aerodynamic in the abstract. Horton wanted maximum interior volume for cargo and passengers while holding overall outside dimensions to a minimum, so that the same vehicle could be used for ground service. He notes that earlier attempts at roadable aircraft had relied either on detachable wings or on cumbersome folding mechanisms, and judged none of them satisfactory. His alternative was a set of relatively short auxiliary wings for slow-speed work that could be folded or retracted into the fuselage.

The patent also offers a diagnosis of why earlier wingless experiments failed. Horton attributes their failure to excessive spillage of pressure over the lateral edges of the fuselage. His remedy is a substantially wingless airplane fitted with pressure sealers along those lateral edges, combined with the small retractable auxiliary wings for stability and control at low landing speeds. A separate narrative source, attributed to Zoggavia and drawing on museum collections, describes the machine as the Horton Wingless HW-X-26-52, registered N39C, built up from the fuselage of a Cessna T-50 Bobcat. It characterizes the concept as a lifting-body type rather than a literally wingless aircraft: the whole fuselage was meant to act as an airfoil, assisted by vertical fin-like surfaces at the lateral edges, called tip plates, intended to counter the vortices that would otherwise form there. The account describes twin piston engines driving tractor propellers and vertical tip fins in place of conventional wings, and states that Horton, described as an engineer from Huntington Beach, lacked the capital to develop the prototype alone and entered into partnership with Howard Hughes and the industrialist Harlow Curtice of General Motors.

These partnership and design-characterization details belong to that secondary narrative. They do not appear in the patent text, which names no collaborators and uses the language of pressure sealers and auxiliary wings rather than the later vocabulary of lifting bodies and tip plates.

The photographic record and its captions

The image material centers on January 1954 photographs taken at Orange County Airport by Robert Geivet and held through the Old Courthouse Museum. The captions describe the aircraft beginning a short test run down the runway, and a companion image is labeled as showing the machine airborne. The tension in the record

The most important feature of this source is an unresolved conflict inside it. The photographic captions present the aircraft as having run down a runway and, in one frame, as airborne. At the same time, the secondary article by George Knapp is titled "The plane that never existed," and another video treatment is framed around betrayal, scandal, and a plane that could not survive. The source does not reconcile these positions. It offers no flight data, no performance figures, no wind-tunnel results, and no independent aerodynamic assessment.
