Power From Space -- The Correa Invention

Harold Aspden's 1996 report Power From Space — The Correa Invention is the eighth item in his Energy Science Report series. It was first issued privately on 26 February 1996 in arrangement with Dr. Paulo Correa, then updated and reissued on 31 July 1996 to coincide with the publication of Aspden's Aether Science Papers. The report does two things at once: it describes how a cold-cathode glow-discharge tube built by Paulo N. Correa and Alexandra Correa is said to run in an excess-energy mode, and it offers Aspden's own aether-theoretic account of where that energy would come from. Aspden is explicit that the second part is his interpretation, not the inventors' stated mechanism.

The device and its operating mode

The Correa apparatus is a cold-cathode discharge tube containing a rarefied inert gas such as argon. Roughly 1,000 volts is needed to initiate ionization. Aspden points to Fig. 1 of U.S. Patent No. 5,416,391 for the operational characteristic — the curve of current against electrode voltage. That curve, he says, contains two regions of negative resistance. The region at higher current is the one used to develop pulsating current oscillations, and it is in that pulsating mode that excess energy is claimed to be drawn from the device.

The distinction matters because the same tube can be driven into a different regime. If the current is allowed to climb into the vacuum arc discharge (VAD) region, the high-current arc condition applies and, on Aspden's account, no excess energy is delivered. The excess-energy mode depends on circuit and load conditions that hold the current in a stable pulsating oscillation within the abnormal glow discharge (AGD) part of the characteristic. Once ions are formed, current flows by electron attraction to the anode and migration of positive ions toward the cathode.

Aspden's theoretical argument

Aspden's framing is that neither Newtonian mechanics nor Einsteinian electrodynamics can be trusted to describe this situation. Conservation of momentum in the Newtonian textbook treatment, he notes, is deduced from the premise that internal actions and reactions between particles are equal and opposite in pairs — a premise he calls manifestly false for electrodynamic interaction, which depends on motion relative to an electromagnetic frame of reference. Einstein's transformations, he continues, lead to the Lorentz force law, under which the interaction force between two moving charges is not directed along the line between them, except in the special case of two charges travelling side by side at the same speed. A filamentary discharge current, in which ions and electrons travel in line and electrons dodge around or neutralize heavy ions, is not that special case.

He adds a second tension: accepted electrodynamics treats the interaction force between moving charges as independent of the mass of the carriers, while Newtonian momentum conservation depends on mass. From this he argues that experiments mixing heavy ions with light electrons should be expected to show energy and momentum anomalies.

The mechanism he proposes runs as follows. Electrons are pulled from the discharge faster than positive ions can reach the cathode, and the heavier, more sluggish ions are compressed into a positive ball of plasma, establishing a radial electric field. The aether charge system resists displacement and holds a phase-lock with the electron motion; to remain smoothly in that state, the whole aether charge system must rotate about the centre of the radial field. This rotation is what Aspden calls vacuum spin, and he claims it draws energy from the universal field enveloping the discharge — an inflow of aether energy from outer space. Planck's constant, in his account, is determined by the structural form of the aether charge array, and the synchronizing influence at the heart of quantum theory is what couples electron motion to that array. He describes two superimposed motions feeding the apparatus: a very high-frequency microscopic orbital motion of the vacuum charge system at the Compton electron frequency, and a low-frequency rotation of a much larger electromagnetic system.

The anomalous cathode reaction force

The experimental signature Aspden invokes is a force on the cathode with no counterpart reaction on the anode. He states that substantial anomalous cathode reaction forces have been observed in reported experiments, and that by theory alone these indicate energy shed by the inductive system in excess of what is supplied when the discharges are pulsed. He then attributes the experimental proof to the Correa research rather than presenting measurements himself. This is the load-bearing step in the report, and it is asserted rather than demonstrated in the text.

The Chernetskii press release

Aspden quotes at length from a 1989 Novosti Press Agency release, No. 03NTO-890717CM04, describing a plasma generator developed under Professor Alexandr V. Chernetskii at the Moscow Georgi Plekanov Institute of the National Economy. The release claims that when a plasma discharger in a Chernetskii circuit is started, the ammeter suddenly shows triple the current and energy output is several times the input, with efficiency "much more than ONE." It cites independent "Expert reports" from staff of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Institute of Electrical Engineering, and describes a self-generating discharge emerging at a critical current density, where plasma electrons become magnetized and move cycloidally, with current–magnetic-field interaction forcing electrons toward the cylinder-shaped discharge axis and producing an electric field. The release gives one figure: an input power of 700 watts with the generator producing three kilowatts for a load resistance, nearly five times as much, and extrapolates to many megawatts from a minimal source.

These figures come from a press release, not a peer-reviewed report, and Aspden reproduces them as a parallel case rather than as Correa results. The megawatt extrapolation is the release's own speculation.

The sonoluminescence aside

In a concluding note Aspden cites C. Eberlein's 1996 Physical Review Letters paper on sonoluminescence as quantum vacuum radiation, and Peter Knight's Nature "News and Views" commentary on it. He offers his own reading, explicitly labelled as opinion: 25 kHz compression of air bubbles in water drives hydronium and hydroxyl ions radially inward, the heavier ions lag, and each pulse sets up a small radial electric displacement that induces vacuum spin with inflow of energy from the quantum underworld. He treats sonoluminescence as another manifestation of the same scenario, while noting it is of little practical consequence beside the Correa claim.

Evidence and limits

The report is an interpretive overlay on other people's experimental claims. Aspden says as much: it is not appropriate, he writes, to elaborate new theories to explain the technology discovered by the Correas; his object is to show that the scientific basis of the discovery has something in common with natural phenomena that have defied accepted explanation. The theoretical argument is his own framework and is not independently validated here. The excess-energy claim originates with the Correa research and the Chernetskii release; the aether-spin mechanism is Aspden's. No raw measurements, calorimetry or independent replication appear in the text. The report also cross-references Energy Science Report No. 1, where Aspden argues that energy set up inductively in a gap between magnetic poles can exceed the input to a magnetizing winding — a related but separate claim about ferromagnetic gaps.
