Energy Science Report No. 10, issued on 31 March 1997 by Harold Aspden through Sabberton Publications, is the last of that numbered series. It argues that ordinary mains-frequency electric fields can drive cyclotron resonance of ions inside the human body, that this constitutes a low-level health hazard, and that a cheap switching device can remove the offending frequency from domestic appliances such as electric blankets. The report is a theoretical and precautionary argument rather than an experimental study, and Aspden says so himself at several points.
The resonance argument
The physical starting point is the standard cyclotron relation. An ion of charge q and mass m moving in a steady magnetic field H circulates at an angular frequency equal to Hq/m. Aspden takes the only steady field present in an ordinary home or workplace to be the geomagnetic field, roughly 50 µT. For an ion of unit atomic mass on the C12 scale, the charge-to-mass ratio is about 96 million coulombs per kilogram, which gives an angular frequency near 4800 rad/s, or about 760 Hz.
The report's central observation is that this figure sits uncomfortably close to the 50 Hz and 60 Hz of mains supply. Aspden attributes those frequencies to the two-pole magnetizing rotor fields of synchronous alternators running at 3000 or 3600 rpm, and calls it a singular misfortune that the resulting supply frequency should land near the natural frequency of ions responding to the Earth's field. He presents a table of resonant frequencies for different single ions in the geomagnetic field, though the table itself is not reproduced in the available text. The argument is that if an applied AC field matches or approaches the ion's natural frequency, energy is pumped into the ion system.
The proposed remedy: the Harwen switch
The practical proposal is the harwen-switch, described here as a two-pole switch with a bridge rectifier built into the switch housing on the output side. It converts mains AC into unsmoothed full-wave rectified DC. In Aspden's account this eliminates the harmful 50/60 Hz component, places 81% of the power into DC, and leaves the remainder in double and higher harmonics at much weaker current amplitude. No heat is said to be wasted, and no cyclotron resonance with hydronium or hydroxyl ions is said to occur.
Aspden is explicit that this is a precaution, not a guarantee. Asked whether the switch assures the user that no harmful effects will arise from a blanket, he answers no, adding that it will be quite some time before scientists can be sure about the matter and that the risks are small anyway. He recommends that blanket manufacturers fit such converters, noting the cost would be a fraction of the blanket's price. For overhead power lines he concedes the problem is much harder, short of conversion to high-voltage DC transmission, because of the voltages, currents and capital investment involved.
The experimental challenge and Aspden's rebuttal
The report's only cited experiment is a null result. Durney and co-workers attempted to measure the effects of resonant magnetic fields on ion transport across simulated cell membranes, using electrolytes containing calcium, potassium or sodium ions and varying field strengths at 100 Hz or lower. They measured membrane capacitance and electrical conductance and found changes below 1%, concluding there was no evidence of resonance.
Aspden's response is theoretical rather than experimental. He argues that one should not assume cyclotron resonance in an ionized liquid behaves like the motion of free electrons in a solid conductor; in a liquid the positive ions are not free to move in the same way. He suggests that any biological effect would come from thermal energy being concentrated into ions rather than neutral molecules. Because positive and negative ions neutralize one another macroscopically, he accepts there can be no significant electrical displacement — but contends this does not rule out enhanced activity by the ionized components. He further speculates that the ordering of motion in cyclotron action makes collisions less likely and that the usual three thermal degrees of freedom might be reduced to two, in which case the effective temperature could rise by tens of degrees without any added heat. This is offered as a possibility, not a demonstrated result.
The dispute with the National Grid authors
An appendix reproduces a research note of 22 January 1997 responding to an article in the November 1996 issue of Physics World by John Swanson, David Renfrew and Nigel Wilkinson of the Technology and Science Division of the National Grid Company in the UK. Those authors acknowledged it would be arrogant to declare an effect impossible merely because no mechanism had been thought of, but held that the absence of a mechanism and of reproducible laboratory results inevitably produces scepticism. They noted that ion cyclotron resonance of the calcium ion had been proposed and stated that such resonance cannot occur in a cell because the ion's orbit would need a radius of more than one metre.
Aspden replies that this shows a misunderstanding of cyclotron resonance as applied to ionized liquids. In his account the only governing condition for pumping energy from a pulsating electric field into a system of ions is that the pulsating frequency be at or near the natural frequency of the ion in orbit. The high-energy-physics cyclotron, he says, increases an ion's speed and orbital radius because it aims to produce an output ion stream; where that is not the aim, collisions limiting the mean free path to sub-micron dimensions do not prevent energy transfer.
Speculative extensions
Two further suggestions are flagged by the author as speculation. The first concerns water moving underground. Aspden wonders whether the Earth has an internal electric charge system associated with the induction of the geomagnetic field, so that a flow of water inside the Earth might carry ionic displacement and charge transfer. He raises this after reading material sent by Dr. E. Larson of Northglenn, Colorado: a passage from Owen Lehto's 1992 book Vibrations: A Practical Study of the Forces that Affect our Health, describing a calf that circled when staked over ground later concluded to be carrying moving water, and a dowsing-style arm test that reversed direction between two points in the same field. Aspden marks the whole line of thought as speculation, writing that he says "may" well knowing he is speculating.
The second concerns the upper atmosphere. In an added note he suggests that in the ozone layer, where oxygen molecules are ionized, cyclotron resonance activity could develop effects superimposed on the basic Schumann resonance phenomenon. Schumann resonance — the Earth–ionosphere cavity resonance — is invoked earlier in the report as the statistical background or data norm against which the hazard risks of electric blankets and power lines are measured and found excessive. Aspden also notes that neutralizing the Earth's magnetic field and any stray DC fields in homes and workplaces would be a formidable and impractical proposition.
Evidence status
The report is an argument from a physical formula plus a proposed precautionary device. Its only cited experiment is a null result that the author attempts to explain away on theoretical grounds. The Harwen switch is not reported as tested here, and no clinical or epidemiological evidence is presented. Aspden's own framing — that the risks are small, the problem elusive, and scientists slow to revise existing theory — sets the claim's confidence level. The report also touches the ATP/Mg-ion literature: Aspden notes Lindley's reference in New Energy News (September 1995) to the stacking of ATP molecules around a magnesium ion, as suggested in the 1970s by Solomon Goldfein, who described biological ATP as meeting the criteria for a microscopic cyclotron. These are cited as context for the resonance idea, not as evidence for the hazard.
